- Daryl Morey refuses to stop playing hardball with James Harden
- Morey knew what to expect after failing to find a suitable trade
- The standoff continues in Philly months after playoff loss
It’s an all-out war in Philadelphia between James Harden and 76ers GM Daryl Morey. On the basis of failed promises and broken trust, Harden is attempting to sever all ties with the franchise and has even gone as far as to expose Morey as a “liar” for all of the public to hear. Meanwhile, in Philly, Morey isn’t surprised at all by the latest turn of events.
“A league source said Morey was not surprised by Harden’s commentary and his attempt to make things personal given his agent’s reaction this past weekend to being informed that the Sixers weren’t able to find a suitable deal,” wrote Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
This news comes after reports that Morey and the Sixers shut down all trade talks, effectively giving up on trying to find a deal for Harden. But after opting into the final year of his deal, James has nowhere else to turn if he wants to play this season.
At this point, Harden is playing all the cards he has and it is putting the ultimate pressure on Morey to find a trade for his disgruntled star before instead of losing him for nothing next summer.
Who Will Win The Philly Standoff?
It seems impossible for Harden to play for the 76ers again, especially given how ugly things have become. But Morey might just decide to wait this out for as long as possible. If he waits until the deadline, perhaps, some desperate team might be willing to offer up a few extra assets.
But for a team with such an already complicated history, success is long overdue and the fans are growing restless with each passing season. If Morey doesn’t turn this situation around soon, and get Embiid the help he deserves, this could be just the beginning of a legendary downfall for the 76ers.
