Derrick Rose announced his retirement from the NBA after a 17-year career across channels yesterday, prompting an outpouring of support to come in from his fans and players around the NBA. The support of family trumps everything in the world, with Rose’s wife Alaina A. Anderson Rose sharing an emotional tribute for the youngest NBA MVP on Instagram after his retirement announcement.

“The 1, NEVER the 2! Everything you do, you do with your family in mind, and we love and appreciate you more than words can say. We are beyond proud of you! You did what so many wouldn’t—you kept going, no matter what. You’ve inspired us all, and we’re incredibly lucky to have witnessed every part of your journey—the highs, the lows, and everything in between.”

“You mean the world to this league, and you’ve made history that no one can ever erase. You’ve paved the way, and no one can deny that. You’re truly HIM—the most humble, kind, loving, and respected, both on and off the court. For everything, there is a SEASON, and now it’s time for the next chapter.”

“I can’t wait for the world to see the greatness that’s still ahead of you. Letting go is never easy, but your best days are still to come, and I can’t wait to be there with you every step of the way.”

“Thank you for all the memories, Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit, and Memphis—we will miss you. Forever our MVP, on and off the court! -Love, your home team!”

Rose played 15 seasons in the NBA and averaged 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists over that time.

His career was almost over at multiple points since he was drafted in 2008 with the No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Bulls. Rose suffered various knee injuries which ruined his prime years, spending the better part of the last 10 years as a rotational player around the NBA.

He was almost out of the NBA in 2018 but managed to hang on by altering his skill set to be one where he didn’t need to use his athleticism to dominate opponents. His layup package was nasty and he became a continuously better shooter over the years.

Instead of being one of those veterans who put off retirement with the hopes of getting an NBA contract eventually, Rose is going out on his own terms. He requested the Memphis Grizzlies to waive his contract, with his retirement announcement following soon after.

Rose’s Former Coach Had An Emotional Farewell Message For Him

Derrick Rose played under current New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau at multiple spots, including Thibs coaching him for his MVP season in 2010-11. The pair share a strong relationship and the coach paid tribute to one of the best players he’s ever worked with.

“Congratulations to Derrick on a Hall of Fame career. Not only was he a great player, which I saw in the eyes of his opponents, but he’s an even better person, teammate, husband, and father.

“The true measure of a man is how well he handles adversity – nobody did it better. Through it all – from the pressure of playing in his home city to being the youngest MVP in NBA history through injuries in three consecutive seasons – he stood tall, never relented, and always came back.

“It was inspiring to watch him grow and push forward no matter what. He is and always will be a very special person. I will cherish our many fond memories together and look forward to watching his next chapter. I know it will be great, and I wish him the very best in his retirement.”

Rose’s Hall of Fame case will be hard to quantify given the fleeting nature of his prime. His impact on basketball is immense, so fans will continue advocating for him to be inducted five years from now when he’s eligible. The Bulls will be expected to retire his No. 1 jersey as well, though that remains to be seen.
