In Cleveland, superstar guard Donovan Mitchell has found a permanent home. While he’s only played 36 games total for the franchise, both he and the Cavs are thriving in their new-found partnership and it’s looking like a match made in heaven.
Still, it wasn’t that long ago that Mitchell was playing for a different team. In fact, for the first five years of his career, Mitch was a member of the Utah Jazz. It’s where he won several playoff series, emerged as a star, and established himself as one of the best offensive players in basketball.
Tonight, Donovan will be returning to Utah for the first time since the big trade, and he found himself reflecting on the sum of his time there.
Tuesday night, Donovan Mitchell returns to Salt Lake City as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It will be his first trip to Utah since he was traded before the season. Mitchell’s return is cloudier than Gobert’s. Feelings are more frayed. There is, or there should be, mutual appreciation between Mitchell and Jazz fans. I’m not sure there is mutual love.
“I don’t know. We did a lot of great things there. We did not accomplish our main goal. I don’t know what the response is going to be, and I am hopeful there will be cheers,” Mitchell told reporters after the Cavaliers’ game in Phoenix on Jan. 8. “Like I said, I had a lot of positives despite not winning a championship. That is not easy and only one team does it. At the end of the day, we played well, and we had great groups of coaches. For me, it is just to get another win on the road. I understand there is going to be a lot of stuff going on but we just have to win as a group.”
The Jazz were among the West’s top teams for years, and they were perceived as a threat to win the title until last season when the writing was already on the wall.
Donovan Mitchell Is Thriving With The Cleveland Cavaliers
No matter how you feel about Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, or the Jazz, those days are a thing of the past now. As Donovan alluded to in his press conference, his only focus is on winning and Tuesday night’s game will be more about fan service than anything else.
Still, the young stud is going to get his prize, as he should. Before the trade, he was building a case as the best Jazz player ever and many fans will probably remember him that way.
In Cleveland, though, he’s turned his game up to another level and it’s been great to witness.
