Draymond Green has been talking about the ‘new media’ for a long time on his podcast, and he has disrupted the space quite impressively by doing his podcast consistently during the Warriors’ championship run. This is something he has been criticized for by existing NBA media members, but Green has been unfazed, giving his unfiltered takes after crucial playoff games.
He did a podcast in the press room after the Warriors won the NBA Finals, having a conversation with Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, and Gary Payton II before giving his thoughts on some things. And one of the things he did was call out the people in the media that doubted the Warriors, as an accountability issue that he has spoken about in the past. In particular, he spoke about the ESPN Power Index, which had given the Warriors something like a 20% chance of winning the NBA Finals.
(starts at 29:01 minutes):
“Let’s talk about some of these naysayers. Before this series started, I saw ESPN Power Index or something gave us a 20% chance of winning. Why? Who makes those things? What is their job security like? Because you’re lying to people. Is anyone held accountable these days?
“I even saw it was like 2-2, and they’re like 79% chance. Are you crazy? You know who you’re dealing with? It’s us. To count us out like that, it’s just crazy to me. Where do y’all get these numbers from? Are they coming from the people that sit up there and don’t know what they’re talking about?”
Green has every right to talk the talk after the Warriors proved almost every doubter wrong with their run. Considering their championship pedigree, anyone writing them off was taking a big gamble, and it didn’t quite pay off either. Draymond is likely to continue trying to hold media personalities accountable for their takes and, with his credibility as an elite player, it is hard to argue against him.
