• Kareem Abdul-Jabbar yelled at former Los Angeles Clippers Ball Boy David Meltzer
• Julius Erving was super nice and signed five pairs of socks for Meltzer’s siblings
• Meltzer picked Erving over Abdul-Jabbar to sign for a lot of money in future
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is regarded as one of the best players of all time. But at the same time, Kareem is not an easy athlete to work with.
Former Los Angeles Clippers ball boy David Meltzer once shared a story of how the Los Angeles Lakers legend yelled at him. On the other hand, the Sports 1 Marketing CEO says Julius Erving was super nice to him.
“I was a ball boy with the Clippers,” Meltzer said. “I go in the first day, Lakers vs. Clippers, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I screw up because it’s my first day, and he was so– he’s pretty intense, which made him great, but he s**t on me like, ‘Boy!’ blah blah blah. I went home crying to my mom, ‘I’m not going back,’ and my mom’s that type of person, ‘Oh yes, you are.'”
Meltzer added: “Next game, Sixers vs. Clippers, and there’s Dr. J. And this man, he said, ‘Son, why’d you give me so many socks?’ and I said, ‘I don’t know they told me to put six on everybody’s locker.’ And he goes, ‘I don’t need six pairs of socks. How many feet do you think I have?’ I go, ‘Two.’ And he goes, ‘That’s right. How many siblings do you have?’ I said, ‘Five.’ He said, ‘Perfect. Grab them.’
“He signed each of the pairs, and then he grabbed a basketball, and he signed it for me. Later on in life, I had so many opportunities to hire Kareem for a lot of money, and I would call Dr. J.”
Meltzer described Abdul-Jabbar as a difficult athlete to work with, but he was impressed with the kindness of Erving. At the end of the day, Meltzer understood being intense was one of the reasons behind Kareem’s success, but he still didn’t send a lot of work his way.
Julius Erving Is A Great Role Model
Julius Erving has a phenomenal playing style that made him a fan-favorite. But on top of that, Dr. J never shied away from teaching fellow players valuable lessons.
A great example of it was when Charles Barkley told Erving that he had six cars. Dr. J responded by asking how many cars could Barkley drive at the same time.
It’s one of the examples of how wise Erving has been throughout his life and why he’s viewed as one of the biggest icons in NBA history.
