Teamwork is absolutely critical in the NBA. As fans, we often witness the display of camaraderie and chemistry between players, fostering a sense of unity and collective spirit. However, there occasionally arises an individual whose approach to the game and interactions with teammates seem to cast a shadow over the team’s cohesion. One such player, whose reputation has sparked considerable controversy, is none other than Draymond Green, the polarizing forward for the Golden State Warriors.
While Green’s talent as a basketball player cannot be denied, his on-court prowess is often eclipsed by his reputation as the “most toxic teammate” in the NBA. His confrontational playing style, fiery temper, and outspoken nature have earned him both praise and criticism. By analyzing both the triumphs and the turmoil, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the enigmatic player who has left an indelible mark on the NBA landscape.
While some argue that Green’s passion and competitive drive are essential to his team’s success, others contend that his actions go beyond the line of acceptable conduct, alienating teammates and fostering a divisive atmosphere. Through interviews with basketball analysts, former teammates, and sports psychologists, it sheds light on the complexities of Green’s personality and determines whether his impact on team dynamics is ultimately a boon or a burden.
There is no doubt that Green has a history of alienating teammates and that list includes All-Star players and even role players who are just trying to do their jobs. It is not often a toxic teammate is given a 4-year, $100 million extension as a 33-year-old, but Green’s leadership qualities seem to be valued by the Warriors franchise. Regardless, there isn’t a more toxic teammate than Draymond and let’s go through his history.
Forcing Kevin Durant To Leave Golden State
Kevin Durant was critical to the Golden State Warriors franchise because they won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, with the superstar forward capturing both Finals MVP awards. However, it was a clash of personalities and egos that ultimately played a significant role in Durant’s decision to depart from the championship-winning team.
The trouble between Green and Durant came to a head during a November 2018 game against the Los Angeles Clippers. In the waning moments of a tightly contested match, with the chance to win the game, Green dribbled up the court instead of passing to a seemingly open Durant. His decision resulted in a costly turnover, and the game eventually slipped away from the Warriors. In the aftermath of the loss, tensions boiled over in the locker room.
Witnesses recall a heated exchange between Green and Durant, with the former reportedly questioning Durant’s commitment to the team and suggesting that the Warriors didn’t need him to win championships. The confrontation quickly escalated, leading to a highly-publicized shouting match that left both players visibly shaken and the team in disarray.
The incident set off a chain reaction that reverberated throughout the NBA community. Reports of the altercation spread like wildfire, igniting debates about Green’s leadership style and his impact on team dynamics. For Durant, who had long battled criticism about his decision to join the already dominant Warriors, the clash with Green magnified the strain he felt from within and outside the organization.
As the season progressed, the relationship between Green and Durant appeared strained, evident in their on-court interactions and body language. Despite their best efforts to quell the rumors, speculation surrounding their fractured partnership only intensified. The media and fans dissected every interaction, looking for signs of discord that might signal Durant’s departure from the Bay Area.
The Warriors managed to reach the NBA Finals that season, but their path to the championship was not without hurdles. Reports of locker room tension persisted, and many insiders believed that the growing animosity between Green and Durant was impacting the team’s cohesiveness and focus on the court. In the end, they fell short of securing the title, further fueling speculation about the fate of the Warriors’ coveted “super team.”
In the summer of 2019, as NBA free agency loomed, Durant faced one of the most significant decisions of his career. While various factors influenced his choice, it is obvious from the players’ sides that the fractured relationship with Green was a pivotal factor in his eventual departure. Ultimately, Durant chose to join the Brooklyn Nets, ending a remarkable chapter in Golden State’s history.
An Assault On Jordan Poole
We have seen multiple instances in the NBA where players attack each other, even their own teammates. However, we probably haven’t seen one where the leader of a team viciously punches a teammate and it is caught on camera for everyone to see. Draymond Green completely decked his own teammate in a video that can be seen with anybody with an internet connection. Nobody knows how that video came out because it just made matters completely worse.
Back in the day, there were hardly recordings of incidents happening in practice. Now, it seems every week, there is at least one person holding a camera at players. Fights do happen at practice, but they hardly ever get leaked from what we have seen throughout NBA history. We are living in the social media era, unfortunately for Draymond Green, so this does not look good for the player’s reputation as a toxic teammate.
During the practice, tensions escalated between Green and the young budding star, Jordan Poole. The disagreement apparently intensified, leading to a heated exchange of words between the two players. As emotions flared, Green, known for his fiery temperament, lost his composure and ended up throwing a punch at Poole. Thankfully, the situation did not escalate further, and the Warriors’ coaching staff and teammates quickly intervened to defuse the altercation. The incident, however, sparked concerns about Green’s behavior and raised questions about his ability to control his emotions, particularly in high-pressure situations.
Green’s punch on Jordan Poole drew widespread criticism from sports analysts and former players, who saw it as a reflection of his reputation as a “hot-headed” and at times, “toxic” teammate. While Green’s passion and intensity have been instrumental in the Warriors’ success, incidents like this only fueled debates about whether his behavior was a necessary part of his leadership style or a hindrance to team dynamics.
In the aftermath of the incident, Green publicly acknowledged his mistake and expressed regret for his actions. He took responsibility for his behavior and addressed the issue with the team, emphasizing the need for better communication and respect among players. While that is commendable, it still isn’t a great look. You could say that Draymond won in the end because he did end up getting a 4-year contract, and Poole is now a member of the Washington Wizards.
Not Backing Down From Chris Paul’s Beef
The beef between Draymond Green and Chris Paul goes way back to the days when the Hall of Fame point guard was a member of the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets.
Both players are known for their competitive spirit, on-court tenacity, and leadership qualities, which often set the stage for heated clashes whenever they faced off against each other. One of the most notable incidents that fueled their beef occurred during a game in January 2018. The Warriors and Rockets were engaged in a hard-fought contest before Green and Paul got into a heated exchange of words. The situation escalated when Green appeared to make a gesture toward Paul, further escalating the tension between the two players.
Beyond the physical altercations, Green and Paul have engaged in verbal spats during post-game interviews and press conferences. Their back-and-forths often make headlines, keeping the media and fans intrigued by the ongoing feud.
While some see their rivalry as a natural byproduct of competitive basketball, others view it as a reflection of Draymond Green’s sometimes confrontational and abrasive style on the court. Green’s tendency to get under opponents’ skin and his willingness to engage in trash talk has made him a polarizing figure in the league. On the other hand, Chris Paul’s reputation as a fierce competitor and vocal leader has also contributed to the tension between the two players.
However, Chris Paul was just traded to the Golden State Warriors, with Jordan Poole heading out of town. Out with the youngster, in with the veteran. However, Draymond is someone who likes to stand on what he says and he did not hold back on the fact that he still does not like Chris Paul. Just because Paul is his teammate doesn’t mean Green will be “fake” and immediately accept him. Green might have done a better job by claiming it was water under the bridge, but it seems that the two stars will need to talk it out before moving on with each other.
An Unlikely Issue With A Youngster

Jonathan Kuminga is a respected youngster due to his potential as an impactful two-way player. Not only does he stand 6’8” and 210 lbs, but he seems to have the right attitude and standing in an iconic Warriors franchise that has four NBA titles over the past decade. However, it seems that Draymond Green has yet another target that annoys him. Apparently, Green has no relationship with the 20-year-old Kuminga.
How a veteran of Draymond’s standing can get into it with a youngster with only two years of professional experience is just confusing. Kuminga is not an outspoken player and probably needs veterans to lead him and teach him the ropes. While Green is likely doing his best in that regard, the report of a stained relationship isn’t a great look for Draymond and his toxic behavior.
The fact that Green openly admitted that he doesn’t even know Kuminga “that well” is not a great situation for a player who has just been retained for likely the rest of his career. Draymond seems to rub people the wrong way, unsurprisingly, and Monte Poole has come out to discuss the veteran’s issue, which has raised some eyebrows. What happens this season will be extremely important with regard to Kuminga and his development because if the apparent rift doesn’t end, it could be ugly for a player who has Draymond’s reputation.
