In Dallas, Texas, the Mavericks are still feeling relief after re-signing Kyrie Irving to a multi-year deal. Now that he’s officially in the books the Mavs can rest easy knowing Luka has some help.

Regarding Doncic himself, there is a sense that he’s gearing up for a huge season. In a recent interview, former Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said Luka will be the MVP.

“I’m sure he’s doing all the right things for him,” Carlisle said of Doncic, via FanNation. “He’s been on the cusp of being the best player in the world. He’s right there, and I think he’s going to be the MVP this year.”

There is no question that Doncic is one of the best in the world at what he does. Last season, with averages of 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8 assists per game, he showed once again that he’s a true superstar.

Next season, with more experience under this belt, it’s certainly possible that Luka elevates his game even further and puts himself in the MVP conversation. Of course, to do that, the Mavs will have to play much better than they did last time.

But after finishing 11th in the West a season ago, it’s clear that the Mavs need more than just Luka and Kyrie if they want to make some noise in the playoffs.

What Are The Expectations For The Mavs Next Year?

At first glance, one might think of the Mavericks as a serious contender for the title — and with both Kyrie and Doncic on the roster, they certainly have a chance to get it done. Unfortunately, the team has failed to really change much of anything as far as the supporting cast goes and it remains to be seen if they can pull something off before the start of training camp.

“I’m with the national team now, so I don’t think about that, but Dallas is taking good steps. We can still sign someone, or maybe not,” said Luka. “It’s been a long summer for me, but I’m very happy to be back.”

Without proper roster changes, there’s only so much we can expect from the Mavs. But maybe with Kyrie ready to go from day one, they can prove all the doubters wrong and show that they cannot be counted out.
