Gary Payton II starred in a controversial moment after being involved in a multiple-team trade that sent him back to the Golden State Warriors in return for five second-round picks.
After a failed physical put the entire trade in jeopardy, GP2 has opened up on this situation, revealing his thoughts about it.
“Not really,” Payton said when asked if he was surprised that he failed the physical. “I kind of knew where my body was, how it was and everything. It was out of my hands. I just had to tell them what it was and go from there.”
This was a complex situation for everybody involved, and the Warriors felt like they were deceived by the Portland Trail Blazers in this move. In the end, they opted to continue with the trade but presented a complaint to the league, which started investigating the Blazers.
They could get some draft picks removed or be fined if the league finds out they did something bad during this trade or in any other.
Golden State Warriors Are Still In Playoff Hunt
While players like Payton and Stephen Curry remain sidelined, the Warriors keep pushing for a playoff spot. They currently boast a 30-30 record, which is enough to rank 7th in the Western Conference. If the season ended today, they would have home-court advantage in the play-in tournament, but it’s pretty obvious that they prefer to have a better position come playoff time.
Payton states that he hopes to be back when the postseason starts, and he would be a great addition to the Dubs if they aspire to defend their 2022 NBA championship. This season has been rocky for them, but if they can get back to their best level and recover Payton’s best version, things could get a lot better.
The Warriors remain a big question mark in the West, but some still believe that fully healthy, this team can make a lot of noise in a stacked Western Conference.
