Shams Charania Says Warriors Will Go Through With Gary Payton II Trade
Gary Payton II is well-known for being one of the best perimeter defenders in the league when he's healthy. He is well-known for being a pest to opposing ballhandlers, and he can even switch onto bigger players defensively in a pinch. Notably, he was part of the 2022 Golden State Warriors championship team.
Recently, there has been a lot of drama about the Golden State Warriors' recent trade for Gary Payton II, as his failed physical revealed he had a serious core injury. There were some rumors that the trade might be in jeopardy, but it seems as though that will not be the case.
The latest report from NBA insider Shams Charania revealed that the Golden State Warriors have decided to go through with trading for Gary Payton II. He did however note that the team "will not pass" his physical.
The Warriors will go through with the Gary Payton II four-team trade, sources tell The Athletic and Stadium. Golden State will not pass Payton's physical exam, sources said, but has decided to move forward with deal that brings back the key 2022 championship piece.
Hopefully, we see Gary Payton II get better sooner rather than later. There is no doubt that he will be a good option for the team when he will become available, and perhaps he can give them a boost during their playoff run.
Warriors Players Were Unhappy The Team Let Gary Payton II Go In Free Agency
Many people thought that the Golden State Warriors would retain Gary Payton II in 2022 free agency. However, the team ended up letting him go, which is how he wound up on the Trail Blazers.
A previous report revealed that many players on the team were unhappy that the team let the guard go in free agency. It is easy to see why they were upset, as generally when teams win championships, they try to run it back.
“If there is anything that the guys on that team, around that team, are upset with, it is letting Payton go, letting him get paid somewhere else like he did,” a Western Conference executive told Deveney. “Everyone understands that with the [luxury] tax, it was really tough to bring him back, but they could have kept him and let [Kevon] Looney walk because, in theory, it would be easier to replace a big guy.”
As of now though, Gary Payton II is finally back with the Golden State Warriors. Though his injury is clearly a concern, if he is able to play he will have a huge impact for them.
The Golden State Warriors may have been inconsistent this year, but when healthy, they have a good shot at winning a championship. We'll see how they do in the future, and hopefully, they can have a deep playoff run.
