The NBA is one of the best and most entertaining sports leagues in the world, giving us some of the most famous athletes in the world and the most talented people we can know of.
Great as he is the league from a sport standpoint, people often forget this is a business and sometimes things don’t go as they should. We have seen unfair situations over time, which have raised eyebrows around the league and made a lot of people upset with them.
Gilbert Arenas has always tried to keep things real when talking about the NBA, first talking about the best cheerleaders in the association and even saying some tactics teams might use to pay less to a player. He recently made a big revelation about how certain positions in the NBA draft could make a lot for some players and be the worst to others.
Gilbert Arenas Talks About The Big Business Side Of The NBA
During a recent edition of his “No Chill with Gilbert Arenas” podcast, the former Washington Wizards player explained how the Golden State Warriors explained to him that if they got a higher pick in the NBA Draft, that player would take his spot on the starting lineup no matter how great Arenas was the prior year.
“After my rookie season, draft is coming up. This is where Yao Ming, J-Will [Jay Williams], and [Mike] Dunleavy, that’s the top 3. Golden State tells me and it’s like, ‘we’re trying to get the No. 2 pick, we need a guard.’ I was like, ‘I am the point guard, what are you talking about? I was rookie of the month at the end, this is what I left with.’ And then it was like, ‘yeah, but he’s the No. 2 pick, so I said, ‘what if I beat him out? What if he can’t beat me?’ They were like, ‘he’s the No. 2 pick.’ Now that’s cool, but if he’s not better than me, he gets in front of me? They said, ‘with the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft, he automatically gets the starting position.’ And I said, ‘how do I keep my spot?’ They said, ‘you’re gonna have to triple his production. It has to be such a distance. And even with a distance, you’re gonna be splitting time.'”
Arenas explained that the type of money players earn also plays a role in how they’re treated in the league, stating that if somebody makes $20 million, that will be more important than somebody who makes way less.
This is the way things have worked in the league for a while now. Fortunately, we’ve seen players work their way to the top of the chain and prove with hard work that they deserve better treatment in their franchises.
It’s unclear if this keeps happening, but the way some things are managed right now, it doesn’t seem like they will favor a huge contract over a player that can deliver the way they need and expect them to.
