After a nightmarish start to the season, the Brooklyn Nets have become one of the biggest stories in the NBA. Considering all the fuss Kevin Durant caused over the summer, experts and fans boldly rightfully the Nets out before they even played a single game this season.
But over the past six weeks or so, the Nets have put together a miraculous turnaround that has them sitting 2nd in the West with a 27-13 record.
Unfortunately, Kevin Durant’s latest injury means the Nets are about to endure their biggest challenge yet: holding down the fort without their best player.
While Kyrie does have some experience leading the Nets on his own, he may not have to carry the load all by himself. According to what one Eastern Conference executive told Heavy Sports, the Nets will be active leading up to the NBA’s trade deadline next month and Atlanta’s John Collins has emerged as a primary target.
Collins is exactly what the Nets are looking to add at this February’s trade deadline. An executive told Heavy Sports that the Nets are looking to add a “star” and “power-forward-like player.”
“The Nets are definitely looking for a deal, but they want to bring in a star who can play alongside what they have. They’d be in the market for a power-forward type, maybe a rebounder,” the executive suggested to Heavy Sports.
Even with Durant, Kyrie, and Ben Simmons, there have been some major doubts about Brooklyn’s supporting cast. In the playoffs last year, and at the start of this season, the Nets’ role-players failed to provide enough support around the star-studded duo and it has been among their biggest problems since the Durant era began.
Do The Nets Have Enough To Win A Title This Season?
Most fans will tell you that any team with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving has a chance to win against anyone. For the Nets, we are seeing just how dominant they can be when everything is going the right way.
Despite doubts about depth, Nets big man Nic Claxton doesn’t have any doubts that his team can win as presently constructed.
“We have everything we need,” Claxton replied when asked if he hoped his play will silence talk of Brooklyn needing to add another big. “When everybody on the court is locked in and we’re all scrambling, playing hard we have enough length to where it gives bigger guys fits… So, we good with everything we got in the locker room and we just got to keep building.”
Tied for the second-best record in basketball, the Nets are clearly a contender for the title this season even if some experts are hesitant to trust them.
If they somehow add another star or quality role-player to this team, it will only further their claim as one of the best teams in basketball.
