- Gordon Hayward wanted to play another round of “Apex Legends” that was being streamed online
- His wife Robyn denied his request
- She could then be heard saying that her life was pathetic as she was watching him play video games
Robyn Hayward has never been the biggest fan of her husband, Gordon Hayward, playing online video games. Back in February 2019, Hayward was playing “Apex Legends” on a Twitch stream and the conversation between him and his wife went viral.
It was presumably time for him to wrap it up, but Gordon still asked her, “I got time for one more?”
Robyn made it very clear that he didn’t, as she said, “No. No, you don’t have time.”
I’m sure that is something every gamer has heard from their mother or significant other at some point. Gordon didn’t make a big deal out of it and told everyone he was leaving.
Just before he could shut it down, though, you could faintly hear Robyn express her disappointment at watching her husband play video games.
“I’m watching you play video games,” Robyn said. “How pathetic is my life?”
The first bit alone might have been enough to make this interaction go viral, and when you add that last line, it was guaranteed to explode on social media. To say her life was “pathetic” just because she watched her husband playing some games, was never going to sit too well with people, especially as there was no other context to it.
Robyn Hayward Explained Why She Made That Remark
Robyn, unsurprisingly, got a whole lot of backlash over that remark. Many felt she was being rather tone-deaf, to say that while being married to an NBA star. She took to Instagram not long after to explain what exactly was going on.
“I just was reading some comments from people who were super offended from me on Gordon’s stream yesterday saying he didn’t have time for another game when he asked,” Robyn said. “We were leaving to go to his workout, so don’t get so offended by things.”
She made it clear that she was only joking when she made that “pathetic” remark.
“And when I was on the phone, it was a joke when I said ‘How pathetic is my life watching him play video games?’ Don’t be so offended by things,” Robyn continued. “Your life is going to be so miserable if you’re offended by everything people say.”
Robyn said she had just walked into the room to inform him that it was time to leave.
“I wasn’t even watching him play video games,” Robyn added. “I had just walked into the room to tell him it was time to go. So, I hope that makes you feel a little bit better, and I hope you have a better day.”

It was probably just a sarcastic joke, and she’d actually be quite used to seeing him play video games. Hayward had been an avid gamer for years and had even invested in Tribe Gaming, a mobile gaming esports organization.
This incident certainly didn’t affect the couple in any way. They are approaching their 10th wedding anniversary, having tied the knot back in May 2014. Gordon, who now has a net worth of $60 million, has four kids with Robyn named Bernadette Marie, Charlotte Margaret, Nora Mae, and Gordon Theodore Hayward.
What Can We Expect From Gordon Hayward In The 2023-24 Season?
Hayward is no longer playing at an All-Star level, but he still remains a solid contributor for the Charlotte Hornets. In 50 outings in the 2022-23 season, he averaged 14.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 0.8 steals per game.
Expect those numbers to go down in the 2023-24 season, though. The Hornets just drafted Brandon Miller with the second pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, and they’ll have Miles Bridges back on the court as well.
While Hayward may get to start at first, I expect the 33-year-old to come off the bench as the season goes on. He may even get traded, as he is in the final year of his four-year, $120 million deal.
