Grant Williams’ tenure with the Dallas Mavericks was marred by friction and underperformance, as sources reveal he quickly wore out his welcome within the organization.

Described as ‘yap, yap, yapping’ by insiders, his demeanor rubbed many the wrong way. Furthermore, reports suggest he arrived in less than optimal physical condition, compromising his defensive abilities.

“I would say one of the ways that Grant Williams rubbed people the wrong way, the yap, yap, yapping obviously that’s kind of part of it with him. Which it’s charmingly obnoxious if he’s productive and it’s grating when he’s not. But he didn’t report in good shape and Grant Williams not in good shape is not a good defender.”

Despite a promising start to the season, where he showcased solid offensive contributions, Willaims‘ performance dwindled over time, resulting in diminished playing time and a notable decline in production. Head coach Jason Kidd’s decision to prioritize other players, such as Josh Green, in the starting lineup further marginalized Williams, signaling a rift between him and the coaching staff.

Williams had a decent season statistically, averaging 8.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. His shooting percentages were respectable, with 41.8% from the field and 37.8% from beyond the arc. Notably, he had recently inked a lucrative four-year, $53 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks, indicating the team’s confidence in his abilities and potential impact.

The Mavericks’ eagerness to offload Williams was evident in their swift decision to trade him to the Charlotte Hornets, demonstrating a desire to distance themselves from his presence. This move underscores the team’s commitment to fostering a positive environment and prioritizing players who align with their culture and objectives.

In the aftermath of the trade, Williams wasted no time taking shots at his former team and its star player, Luka Doncic, further highlighting the strained relationship between him and the Mavericks. He had incidentally been praising Doncic just a few days before he got traded.

His departure provides both parties with an opportunity for a fresh start, with Williams seeking to revitalize his career in Charlotte while the Mavericks aim to move forward without the distractions he brought to the organization.

The Mavericks Need To Build A Competitive Team Around Luka Doncic For Years

The Dallas Mavericks find themselves at a crucial juncture in their franchise’s history, centered around the transcendent talent of Luka Doncic. At just 24 years old, Doncic has already established himself as one of the premier players in the NBA, boasting an impressive resume that includes five All-Star selections and four First-Team All-NBA nods in just his sixth season.

His statistical prowess is nothing short of remarkable, with season averages of 34.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 9.6 assists per game, accompanied by efficient shooting percentages of 49.1% from the field and 37.9% from beyond the arc.

As the cornerstone of the Mavericks’ future, it’s imperative that the organization builds a competitive team around Doncic that can contend for championships for years to come. While the acquisition of Kyrie Irving last season was a significant move, it failed to translate into postseason success, highlighting the need for a more cohesive and durable roster.

This season, despite a promising start, the Mavericks have encountered setbacks due to injuries, resulting in a current standing of 7th in the highly competitive Western Conference with a record of 31-23.

The team’s struggles have raised concerns, particularly regarding Doncic’s long-term commitment and satisfaction with the franchise. Reports suggest that Doncic may become discontented if the Mavericks fail to make the playoffs or underperform in the postseason.

To ensure sustained success and appease their superstar, the Mavericks must prioritize roster construction that complements Doncic’s skill set and maximizes the team’s potential. By assembling a formidable supporting cast capable of consistently contending at the highest level, the Mavericks can establish themselves as perennial contenders and solidify their status as a destination for elite talent in the NBA.
