“If They Didn’t Want Me Then, I Don’t Want Them Now.” – Stephen Curry Once Refused To Leave Davidson College For Duke University

Not every basketball player hits their peak at the same time. There are players like Steve Nash who didn’t have their MVP breakthrough until his 30s and there are players like Austin Rivers who could never dominate the way he did in high school again.

Stephen Curry was a slow grower as well, not getting recruited by his dream colleges despite being Dell Curry’s son, settling to go play for Davidson College. After a breakout freshman season, Curry was approached by his dream project at Duke University, something he declined because of loyalty to Davidson.

“If they didn’t want me then, I don’t want them now. F*** ’em, I’m staying at Davidson.”

Duke had rejected Curry as a walk-on before he enrolled with Davidson. In his freshman season, Curry averaged 21.5 points and proved to all D1 teams that he may be one of the most gifted offensive players in the NCAA at the time. His loyalty to Davidson has been reflected in the NBA as well, with Curry entering his 15th season with the Golden State Warriors.

Stephen Curry’s Loyalty Is His Best Trait

Curry got to become the greatest shooter in league history within the Warriors set-up, never straying from the team even when they struggled to put together a winning team in Curry’s early seasons. The team being as good as they have been over the last decade also means that Curry has never cared to leave, but there are players who leave teams at the slightest bit of adversity.

Steph has been rewarded with four titles, two MVPs, one Finals MVP, and the title of the greatest shooter of all time in NBA history. His career average with the Warriors is 24.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.5 assists, as he’s also their all-time leading scorer with over 21,000 points. It’s an incredible career for a player most fans are hoping will be a one-team man.
