• Kyrie Irving is considered one of the greatest rim finishers in league history

• Irving regularly converts layups from impossible angles

• Former teammate Iman Shumpert has revealed how Irving learned this skill

Being a finisher around the rim is something that players of a big size often use as their primary offensive skillset due to their size allowing them to get to the rim for easy finishes. LeBron James is an example of this and has been one of the best finishers in the NBA for the last 20 years.

LeBron’s former teammate, Kyrie Irving, may be the best pound-for-pound finisher in league history. Irving is lauded for his layup-finishing abilities, with former teammate Iman Shumpert explaining how Irving learned to make the shots that he does.

“He grew up playing on a rim that was missing pieces on the backboard. That’s how he learned those weird angles to twist the ball off of because his backboard was missing pieces. Picture going up to the rim this way and you have no backboard to finish because someone is on your arm. So he learned how to look forward, spin it, so it could hit the left side and go in on the right.”

Learning how to execute off-the-glass layups when the backboard is missing pieces is insane work, but doing that gave Irving one of the most unique skill sets in the current NBA. His highlight reels are consistently incredible and fans will be excited for more clips coming out from Dallas.

Kyrie Irving Hoping To Put Up Winning Numbers

The Mavericks are coming off a season where they missed the playoffs in an embarrassing season for the franchise. Luka Doncic had a heavy load early in the season and his body broke down by February when Kyrie joined the franchise.

There were more things wrong with the roster than before, so Kyrie couldn’t have really kept them in the playoff fight. He averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in 20 games for Dallas.

With a new contract and a strong offseason by the Mavs, Kyrie will hope that in-shape Luka and him and dominate next season and build off the incredible offensive flashes we saw in the small sample size of their partnership.
