NBA legend turned broadcaster Charles Barkley has always been one to stir up controversy, and it seems he can’t help but ruffle some feathers again ahead of the 2023-24 season. In one of his more recent fiery quotes, he suggested that a loss for Team USA in the World Cup this year might actually be a good thing for all parties involved.

The reasoning made sense to Barkley, but Jaren Jackson Jr. wasn’t having any of it during a recent conversation with reporters. “Chuck from what, [Alabama]? Chuck keep doing that TNT thing… I bet he thought that was funny.”

According to Barkley, Team USA losing this year would drastically drive up the interest and excitement for the country that beat them. In turn, per Barkley, it makes the product better for everyone as the game gets a chance to grow overseas.

“They act like if we don’t win the gold medal it’s going to be the worst thing to ever happen to civilization,” said Barkley. “I think it’d really help with popularity in one of these little third-world countries if they won the gold medal.”

Does Barkley Deserve The Criticism?

Chuck has made a living out of sharing his hot takes, and this is another take that has become wildly unpopular among American-born fans and players. Just like any other country in the competition, Team USA wants to win the gold and everyone on the team has made that clear.

So while a non-gold finish may not be the end of the world for Team USA, you can bet they will be working overtime to bring home first place. If other countries want a chance to shine on the world stage, nothing is stopping them from taking the spotlight for themselves.

The only thing standing in their way is Team USA, who is so far 3-0 in games played this year. So far, at least, it seems the U.S. is still at the top of the field.
