The Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic, and Kyrie Irving have all been the topic of discussion ever since the team failed to make the playoffs for the 2022-23 NBA season. And joining that list now is head coach Jason Kidd.
In the aftermath of the team’s disappointing run, CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish opined that time might be running out for Kidd, despite his early success with the Mavericks.
Though the Mavericks’ postseason run a year ago surpassed the success Kidd had in Milwaukee, Year 2 has been a painful reminder of the pitfalls of having Kidd as the head coach,” Wimbish said.
“Whether it’s calling the same unsuccessful game-winning play over and over again, or shirking responsibility in favor of sarcastic excuses, Year 2 of Kidd’s era with the Mavericks has shown that the honeymoon phase is over in Dallas, just as quickly as it ended in Milwaukee.”
The analyst/insider also shed light on Kidd’s tenure with Milwaukee, which crumpled after having started off on a bright note. She added that he may have been backed by Mark Cuban and the front office, but there was no doubt that there was a pattern of his coaching stint getting bad after a solid start.
“With reports surfacing that the Mavericks fear Doncic could request a trade as early as the summer of 2024, the pressure to succeed in Dallas is at an all-time high. With that much at stake, Dallas doesn’t have time to wait and see if this time around will be different than Kidd’s previous head coaching gigs.”
For now, there are no immediate signs that Kidd will be replaced, and by the looks of it, the think-tank does seem to have a lot of faith in his abilities as the man manning the sidelines.
Jason Kidd Believes Kyrie Irving And Luka Doncic Are Meant To Play Together
When Kyrie Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, there was a major balance of power out West. The Mavericks went from playoff contenders to title favorites.
But it was a poor run soon after the mercurial guard’s arrival, and things went south pretty quickly. That said, Kidd wasn’t concerned about the fit and chemistry between Irving and Doncic.
Per Dallas Morning News’ Callie Caplan, he believed that both players were meant to play together, and the gelling was a process that needed time.
The Mavericks have their work cut out for them in the offseason. For starters, they will need to figure out a way to convince Irving to stay while also giving Doncic the reinforcements he needs. While at it, the focus will also be on Kidd to see if he delivers with a possibly upgraded roster next season.
