John Stockton is a traditionalist, even when he was on the court and in real life. He was the definition of an old-school point guard who would playmaker and defend, being the ultimate floor general. His old-school tendencies spill over into his life, as Stockton revealed on a podcast that he is against using smartphones, electing to continue using a basic flip phone.

(Starts at 9:30)

“Well I don’t know, it does feel miserable. I still have a flip phone, and people make fun of that. I love it, without a doubt; the first comment most people have is ‘You have a flip phone.’ I watch those things, and people stare at them. When I have access to it when I’m traveling, and I use one, you get ping, ping, ping, and all this to grab your attention, it drives me nuts. It’s just not for me, it’s really simple, I’d rather live life face to face and shake people’s hands and talk to them than push the buttons.”

The distractions that smartphones provide are incredible, and it’s wise to be wary of them. If one cannot strike a healthy balance, it can be a detriment to your health and overall attention capacity. Stockton can keep his peace instead of being in a cycle of notifications he has to flip through. It isn’t for everyone, but it’s okay for everyone to have their individual preferences.

John Stockton And Karl Malone Both Stay Away From Smartphones

It doesn’t seem like Stockton is the only old-school Jazz star. His old running mate and one of his closest friends, Karl Malone, also subscribes to being away from the smartphone world. Malone’s wife once shared a picture of Malone and Stockton together at an arena with their flip phones in their hands.

To have a successful pick-and-roll, you need the ball handler and the screener to be in perfect sync. It’s not a surprise that Stockton and Malone are arguably the greatest pick-and-roll duo ever on the court, given how similar they are off the court.

The pair had such a deadly offensive partnership that the Jazz never missed the playoffs with them. They also made two NBA Finals and would likely have retired as champions if Michael Jordan wasn’t standing in their way both years. This proficient duo led to Stockton being the league’s all-time assists leader by a wide margin, while Malone retired with more career points than Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

John Stockton Keeps It Simple

Instead of complicating his life by staying on top of the newest trends, Stockton lives a quiet life where he’s focused on being a father to his six children. Along with that, he occupies his time by doing a lot of philanthropic work and dropping the occasional controversial remark. He kept it simple on the court and exercised the fundamentals to their maximum to excel as an NBA player. He’s applying that to his retired life as well.

Stockton actively coaches youth basketball teams in Utah and shares his knowledge with the next generation of players. He also spends a lot of time doing volunteer work and has worked with the NBA’s “Stay in School” program, the Primary Children’s Medical Center, Children’s Miracle Network, and the Utah Chapters of the National Society to Prevent Blindness, among many others.

In addition to his volunteer work, Stockton was also involved in coaching youth basketball teams and helping young players develop their skills. He often held basketball camps and clinics for kids, where he would share his knowledge and experience with the next generation of players.
