In a recent interview with DJ Vlad, four-time NBA champion John Salley openly shared his perspective on carrying a gun during his time with the Detroit Pistons, shedding light on a controversial viewpoint regarding personal security and the American gun culture. Salley went on to highlight the cultural aspect, stating:

“When I was in Detroit, I always had a gun. Even though I was with my brothers and we had security, I always carried my gun.”

So, for some people, we’re Americans, we feel safer with guns… This is the culture – People feel safer with guns.” (0:20)

Salley acknowledged that despite having security and being part of a team, he felt safer carrying a gun during his tenure in Detroit. He expressed that while he might not necessarily consider it the right choice, he felt mentally prepared to handle potential adverse situations.

This isn’t the first time Salley has associated gun culture with Americans, as he previously defended Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant’s gun-related celebration, linking such actions to deeply embedded aspects of American culture.

The 6’11” forward justified gun-waving celebrations as part of the hip-hop culture, emphasizing its presence in videos and connecting it to historical references.

Despite acknowledging the concerns associated with carrying guns, Salley cited personal experiences where he felt violated, such as an incident with a police officer during his time with the Miami Heat. He also recounted facing discrimination during a traffic stop in LA, realizing the potential misuse of authority against ordinary citizens.

Salley’s perspective adds to the ongoing conversation surrounding gun culture, personal safety, and the broader cultural context within the United States.

Controversial Gun Incidents With NBA Players

In the NBA, controversial incidents involving players and guns have drawn significant attention, with two notable cases involving Gilbert Arenas and Ja Morant.

The infamous incident with Gilbert Arenas occurred in 2009 when he and teammate Javaris Crittenton had a dispute related to a card game on a team flight. The disagreement escalated, leading to both players bringing guns into the locker room as a purported means of intimidation. The situation reached a boiling point when Arenas left firearms in his teammate’s locker with a note saying, “Pick 1.” The incident sent shockwaves through the league and prompted the NBA to take swift action.

As a consequence, Arenas faced severe penalties, including a suspension without pay for the remainder of the 2009-2010 season, totaling 50 games. The league imposed this penalty not only due to the potential danger posed by the presence of firearms but also to maintain the integrity and image of the NBA. The incident tarnished Arenas’s reputation, and he struggled to regain his standing in the league afterward.

Ja Morant, the rising star of the Memphis Grizzlies, faced his own gun-related controversy. In a video that went viral during the previous season, Morant was seen holding a gun, contributing to the perception of a thug-like attitude. The NBA responded by suspending him for eight games.

However, Morant found himself in a similar situation during the offseason, appearing in another video with a firearm. This time, the league took a more stringent stance, handing him a 25-game suspension at the beginning of the current season.

The consequences of Morant’s actions extended beyond the basketball court, impacting his financial standing through lost salary and endorsement opportunities. The league’s decision also served as a clear message about the importance of player conduct and the potential repercussions for tarnishing the league’s image. Morant now faces heightened scrutiny, with the NBA instituting measures to prevent future incidents and maintain a positive public image.
