Ahead of the NBA’s first annual in-season tournament, Suns star Kevin Durant was asked to make his picks on the outcome of several brackets slated to compete starting on Friday. Mixed in his answer was a nod to the Golden State Warriors and his former teammate, Chris Paul. According to Durant, Paul is the “greatest point guard of this generation,” although he made sure to mention that it’s still open for debate.
“The Warriors, who won four championships in our era, added CP3, who is arguably the best point guard of this generation,” said Durant. “Arguably… meaning I didn’t say he was for sure the best.”

Obviously, some critics would argue that Stephen Curry deserves the title of best point guard in this era. As a 4x champion and the greatest shooter in NBA history, his impact on the game itself is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Even so, Chris Paul was a pioneer for the modern-day point guard, and he was the face of the league long before Curry’s rise to power in the mid-2010s. Durant only played with Chris for a brief time for the 2022-23 season, but it was more than enough for him to validate Paul’s status as one of the best point guards in modern basketball.
Chris Paul Is An All-Time Great
Paul, 38, is a longtime NBA veteran and a future NBA Hall of Famer. With 18+ seasons under his belt, he’s currently among the most accomplished players in the league. This summer, he joined the Warriors as a 12x All-Star, 11x All-NBA player, 9x All-Defensive player, and 5x assists leader. At 11,534 assists so far, Chris Paul ranks third All-Time in the category in NBA history. And while Paul’s best days are likely behind him, he has shown amazing longevity and continues to build upon his career that spans nearly two decades long.
Of course, the biggest thing holding back Paul’s legacy is a championship. it’s no secret that the self-proclaimed “point God” has failed to win the championship once in his career. The closest he ever got was in 2021 with the Suns, when they lost to the Bucks in the NBA Finals. To date, Paul is still widely considered one of the top point guards of this generation, and his skills as a floor general and leader make it impossible not to respect what he brings to the table. But time is running out for Chris Paul, and this stint with the Warriors could be his last chance to capture that elite title.
The Last Chance For A Championship
By all accounts, this could be the final stretch of Chris Paul’s career. Fortunately, his trade to the Warriors in 2023 has put him in a prime position to succeed and the early signs are looking good. The Dubs are 3-1 so far this season and the minutes with Paul on the floor have shown encouraging results.
In roughly 30 minutes per game, Paul is averaging 11 points, 8.3 assists, and 2 steals per game on 40% shooting. After Kerr’s decision to take Paul off the bench this week, his numbers should rise with more control of the offense as leader of the second unit. Regardless of his role, now is the time for Paul to seize the opportunity and prove he can win at the highest level.
