• Kevin Garnett sought to motivate Anthony Davis ahead of the 2022-23 season

• KG believes Davis should be in contention for the MVP trophy

• The former Celtics champion claimed there isn’t a gulf of skill between Nikola Jokic and AD

Kevin Garnett often hears Anthony Davis be brought up as today’s equivalent of a player like him, but it seems AD is yet to live up to his potential. Garnett has seen enough and wants Davis to win league MVP in the next two seasons to prove he’s still as good as Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid, if not better.

“Guess what, I’m expecting Anthony Davis to be MVP in the next two years or something. You can’t let Joker come in the league and surpass you. Nah, sh*t. Anthony Davis can do everything [Nikola Jokic] can do. He can do everything Embiid can do. The f*ck you talking about bro?  I’m expecting him to be MVP, if not this year, definitely next year.”

Davis has proved he can be the most versatile big-man defender in the NBA while having a decent scoring touch that can allow him to have an impact from anywhere on the court. Unfortunately, his lack of consistency and availability has been holding him back since he made it to the Lakers in 2019.

Anthony Davis Can Still Live Upto Kevin Garnett Comparisons

In terms of a two-way power forward that was long, lanky, and offensively gifted, AD and Garnett are very comparable. The difference is that Garnett won a league MVP and a DPOY along with his sole championship win. He won the MVP with the team that drafted him as well, easily becoming the best player in Timberwolves history.

Davis left the Pelicans without winning a major individual award with them. He clinched the championship in 2019-20 and played a massive role, also finishing runner-up in the DPOY race that season. However, he hasn’t come close to competing alongside Jokic and Embiid in the MVP race in the last three seasons.

Davis averaged 26.8 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks in the 2023 Western Conference Finals, being dominated by Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets in a sweep. They have to come back with a vengeance this season, especially AD, who’s having people question if he’s even worth a max contract anymore.
