In a message to his over 4 million followers, Kyrie Irving finally broke his silence on the ongoing crisis happening around the world. In a short but cryptic post on X, Irving explained the legacy of his ancestors and how it’s his obligation to stamp out the forces of evil wherever they may be.

“I am the living legacy of My Ancestors that chose to stand tall against the Evil forces of this world,” wrote Irving. “There are too many human beings that have been massacred for being a particular race, culture, hue, religion, or nationality. I have more work to do.”

Irving, an 8x NBA All-Star, has a track record for speaking up on social issues in the past and it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that he’s speaking up now in light of what’s happening in Israel, Palestine, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. While nobody can blame Kyrie for wanting to speak out against the violence, his mention of having “more work to do” isn’t a good sign for the Mavericks, who cannot afford any distractions this season. And for a guy who has a history of going AWOL, Irving needs to be completely focused on the season at hand if he wants to avoid stirring up any more outrage from the community.

A Big Season For Kyrie Irving

In the aftermath of his vaccine scandal and the trade request that destroyed the Brooklyn Nets, Kyrie became a highly controversial figure in NBA circles. By the time he was sent to the Mavericks in 2023, his reputation across the league was lower than it had ever been. With Luka Doncic, Kyrie looked comfortable enough — but the Mavericks didn’t have enough to keep up with the other Western Conference elites.

The key to success this time will not only be a healthy season from Irving, but a season where he can avoid sowing discourse and division in his own locker room. So far, since his arrival to Texas, Uncle Drew has been on his best behavior but one has to wonder how long it will last given the current atrocities being committed across the world right now. Irving is at a point now where he’ll have to decide what kind of player he wants to be: one who constantly creates problems and becomes a distraction, or one who can lead by example by taking care of business on and off the court.

Encouraging Signs For The Mavericks

With the Kyrie situation stable, there’s nothing stopping the Mavericks from finally having a breakthrough this season. In just the first few games, there are some strong signs that this Mavericks team is poised for a better finish than the 2022-23 campaign. Besides a fresh Doncic and rejuvenated Kyrie Irving, the Mavs also have their secret weapon, Dereck Lively II, to lean on. He was explosive in his debut with a statine of 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 block per game in 30 minutes. Just a few days later, Lively got the start against the Nets and he looked like an ideal fit with the starters.

The best part of this season’s start for Dallas is probably Luka Doncic himself, who has looked like an early MVP candidate through the first week of play. Currently averaging 41 points. and 11.5 rebounds per game on the season, Doncic could be on track for his best season yet if he can maintain this level of play all year long.
