  • NBA executives are concerned about C-Wood’s work ethic
  • Lakers question if they can eliminate “bad habits”
  • Lakers are ‘optimistic’ they can bring out the best in Wood

As a 6’10”, 214-pound big man with amazing scoring potential, Christian Wood should be the kind of player that is widely coveted across the league. And yet, months into NBA free agency, Wood remains unsigned despite averaging over 16 points per game last season.

Despite the numbers, Wood’s value has declined due to concerns about focus and work ethic. In Dallas, his minutes were limited for these reasons, and it remains to be seen if he can change the narrative.

But for the Lakers, who are still deciding what to do with their final roster spot, there is confidence internally that they can get through to him and elevate his game.

“The big question would be whether the Lakers’ structure — headlined by coach Darvin Ham and James — could keep Wood focused on winning while eliminating some of his bad habits and overcoming some deficiencies,” wrote Dan Woike of the LA Times. “While he’s already played for seven teams, there’s at least some internal optimism that the Lakers could make it work as stop No. 8.”

It can be tough for players to stay focused in LA, but the Lakers demand maximum effort from all their players, and Wood will have to work hard if he wants to earn a place in the rotation.

But if he’s able to stay consistent and play the right way, signing him could be a major payoff for the Purple and Gold, who have long searched for a dependable backup big man.

Lakers Are Big Winners Of The 2023 Offseason

Unlike in years past, the Lakers didn’t make any big splashes this summer. They chose to pursue supporting talent instead in the form of Gabe Vincent, Taureen Prince, and Cam Reddish, among others.

Together, those additions give the Lakers some added depth, size, and flexibility that will help keep them competitive for years to come.

“This means that Rob Pelinka is doing his thing right now,” Perkins said on ESPN. “The Lakers right now, they are winning in this free agency. They are winning right now.”

It remains to be seen how these new moves pan out for the Lakers, but with good health and good luck, they could easily find themselves back in the NBA Finals.
