Russell Westbrook has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the season, as the former MVP has played quite well in his new role off the bench. It was hard to imagine a scenario a few months back where Russ would be having any kind of success while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, so it is great to see him do well.

While Anthony Davis has deservedly gotten most of the credit for the Lakers turning things around, Russ has played his part in this recent revival. He has won over a lot of the fans who were done with him after that disastrous first season and one of them on Reddit, u/makethetradepelinka, put out a post where he wondered how long Westbrook would remain on the bench, as he wants him to become a starter once again. As the fan points out, having someone who earns $47 million on the bench isn’t something that is ideal, but head coach Darvin Ham has to make decisions that will help the team win, and Russ coming off the bench has done just that.

Lakers Fans Now Want The Team To Keep Russell Westbrook

If you had asked Lakers fans just a couple of months back if they wanted Westbrook on the team, 99% of them would have said no. There was good reason for it as well, as it was hard to see any way where things would work for him on the Lakers.

They now want GM Rob Pelinka to not trade him this season , as he has been their third-best player so far. Fans were split on if Westbrook should get an extension, which is saying something considering how bad things were not so long back. There are still some issues with Westbrook, no doubt, like the fact that he and LeBron James can’t be on the court together for extended periods, as they just aren’t a good fit with each other. It is why Russ has flourished off the bench, as he gets to be the primary ball handler, and if he agrees on a reduced deal, the Lakers might consider keeping him around after this season.
