LiAngelo Ball found himself in hot water back on November 7, 2017, after he was arrested for stealing sunglasses in China, but his father LaVar Ball believes the whole situation was just blown out of proportion.

“Things don’t go bad, he just threw some glasses and made a mistake, one thing,” Ball said on Vlad TV. “He was going to pay for it with his card, the card didn’t work because they didn’t tell him he was going to China to use the card.”

While LaVar acknowledges it was a mistake, he doesn’t think it was a big deal.

“Out of all the things Gelo ain’t did nothing wrong then all of a sudden you do something wrong overseas,” Ball continued. “It’s one mistake, it’s not a big deal, that’s what I tell people.”

The 55-year-old stated that he had seen a lot worse than his son’s actions on that day.

“People look at me like, ‘Oh, you said stealing ain’t a big deal.’ Well let me tell you this, I’ve seen people get shot… My son didn’t go in there cussing (like), ‘Motherf****** give me the gloves.’ and all this stuff,” Ball stated. “He just went in and made a mistake at the wrong time, so you can’t kill him like that.”

LaVar felt the whole world was coming down on his son, so it made no sense for him to do it as well. He told LiAngelo to look at it in a positive sense, that it led to the Big Baller Brand going global.

Following the incident, UCLA had indefinitely suspended LiAngelo, which led to LaVar pulling him out of the college. He and his younger brother LaMelo then headed overseas to Lithuania to continue their basketball careers, and BBB went with them.

LaVar also founded the Junior Basketball League a year after this incident, and he says none of that would have happened, had it not been for it.

When Vlad then brought up the fact that LiAngelo was facing three to 10 years in prison for the offense as it was in China, and not America, LaVar said he wasn’t worried about that at all.

“No, ain’t got to be America,” Ball stated. “Let me tell you this, you better have some people over there that can do something for you. So, you have to align yourself with Chinese. We already got roots on the ground…”

Their contacts and the fact that LiAngelo didn’t commit a truly awful crime by any means, meant he didn’t have to spend years in jail. He did have to spend a day and a half there, though, and Ball had spoken about what that was like.

LaVar Ball Blasted Donald Trump

Ball wasn’t the only one caught stealing from the Louise Vuitton store, as his then-teammates Cody Riley, and Jalen Hill were as well. After they made it back to the U.S., then-president Donald Trump took credit for getting them out of prison.

At that time, LaVar had strongly come out against Trump and stated he didn’t do anything to get the three of them back to the States. During this interview, Ball once again brought up the Trump incident.

“Trump tried to come over there and say, ‘Yo, I helped him and I took him out of jail and I did that,'” Ball said, “It was like you weren’t coming over here before that, you was already on you way over there and you try to tie yourself to this.”

The three of them had reportedly been released before the president had even made those claims. Ball calling Trump out led to an interesting back-and-forth, as the latter stated that he should have left them in jail, as LaVar was ungrateful.

Ball then boldly claimed later during this interview that had Trump been on his side, then he’d still be president today. I doubt that would have helped his reelection, but I am not at all surprised LaVar said something like that.
