LeBron James gave a quick interview after Team USA won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He was asked by the reporter what name he would give to Team USA, similar to the 1992 Dream Team, or the 2008 Redeem Team. James had a quick response, dubbing the 2024 squad The Avengers.

James is far from the first one to suggest this name for Team USA. When it was first revealed that LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant would represent Team USA at the Olympics, many fans made the comparison to the Earth’s mightiest heroes.

James, Curry, and Durant are the three defining players of their generation. So to see them assemble just like the Avengers do in the comics and in their blockbuster movies was nothing short of cinema for basketball fans around the world. James was even given the nickname of LeCaptain America after his performance as the flagbearer for the U.S. at the Olympics opening ceremony.

Team USA needed to assemble their version of The Avengers in order to win the gold medal at the Olympics this year. Last year’s FIBA World Cup was like ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ for Team USA, as they weren’t able to win the tournament or make the podium. So this year’s Olympics was very much Team USA’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’; their big chance at redemption.

And redeem themselves they did, as Team USA steamrolled the competition en route to securing the gold medal for the fifth consecutive time at the Olympics.

LeBron James spoke after Team USA won the gold medal about what this win meant to them. He noted that they wanted this moment, and went out and earned it. There is no denying that Team USA was the best team in the tournament, and now they have gold to prove it.
