LeBron James‘ longtime friend, manager, and business partner, Maverick Carter, has admitted to illegally betting on NBA games. As part of an investigation into bookmaker Wayne Nix, Carter was interviewed by law enforcement where he apparently admitted to placing at least 20 bets on football and basketball games over the span of a year.

“In 2021 and before 38 states and the District of Columbia legalized sports betting, Maverick Carter was interviewed a single time by federal law enforcement regarding their investigation into Wayne Nix,” the spokesman, Adam Mendelsohn, said in a statement on ESPN. “Mr. Carter was not the target of the investigation, cooperated, was never charged, and never contacted again on the matter.”

The bets ranged in price from $5,000 to $10,000, but Carter denied that any of the money was used to bet on Lakers games. While betting is strictly prohibited for agents, players, team officials, and league officials, it does not include business managers. Unfortunately for Carter, however, his activities were exposed when the investigation into Wayne Nix put him in the middle of a scandal after he was exposed in a conspiracy.

What Happened To Wayne Nix?

Wayne Nix is a former minor league baseball pitcher who recently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to operate an illegal sports gambling business and filing a false tax return. The former athlete used his connections to recruit three former MLB players and a former pro football player as fellow bookies. Since taking wagers from active players is a direct violation of MLB rules, they were forced to investigate the matter and now Nix faces up to eight years in prison.

In the fallout of this investigation, the whole client list is being reviewed and the names include many high-profile people from the industry. Among them is Maverick Carter, who is now taking a defensive approach after his connection to Nix got leaked. Fortunately, the NBA can take no formal action against Carter but it’s a rare mistake from the LeBron camp after over 20 years staying clean.

Who Is Maverick Carter?

Not to be mistaken with LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, Maverick Carter handles the business side of LeBron’s interests. Like many other top-level athletes and celebrities, LeBron James doesn’t handle his dealings by himself. Instead, he employs a team of specialists and friends to help him manage his expanding empire for him. Maverick Carter is probably among the single most powerful and influential voices in LeBron’s inner circle and he’s been there from the very beginning. As the CEO of SpringHill Entertainment and Uninterrupted, Carter has played a big role in building up James’ influence and success in the world of entertainment and business.

In this case, Carter made a rare slip-up in judgment by associating himself with Nix and getting mixed up in an illegal gambling operation. Over the past 20 years, LeBron and his guys have done a nearly flawless job avoiding controversy and staying out of trouble with the law. And while Maverick Carter will come out of this unscathed, the situation does have people talking about what else might be going on behind the scenes for James and his top lieutenants.
