Luka Doncic has been in the NBA for less than two full seasons, but he is already proving to be among the league’s most elite players.
Selected to his first All-Star team this season, he’s averaging 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 8.7 assists for the Dallas Mavericks as the team holds a 7th place standing in the West.
We have yet to see if Luka can maintain this level of play but it didn’t stop the experts at ESPN from picking him as the player most likely to be the next to pick up their first NBA MVP.
“At the risk of being accused of local bias: Luka Doncic,” ESPN‘s Tim MacMahon said. “Not that it’s a controversial pick. The kid couldn’t even legally buy a beer in the United States until February, and he’s already flirting with averaging a triple-double for a playoff team. There’s still plenty of room for improvement, particularly with his 3-point shot (31.8%) and continued chemistry development with co-star Kristaps Porzingis, and the Mavericks might be a piece or two away from being bona fide contenders.”
There are plenty of young stars in the league, but Luka may be the best of them.
Even going back to his days in Slovenia, he had a knack for putting the ball in the hoop. That skill set has only grown over these past two years and, today, he’s one of the bets un the world at racking up points for his team.
Luka will have his fair share of competitors — that includes names like Trae Young, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ja Morant, and Zion Williamson. But something tells me he’ll do just fine against anyone as he continues to make a name for himself on basketball’s biggest stage.
