The Dallas Mavericks are on the brink of missing out on a spot in even the play-in tournament, in what has been a disastrous 2022-23 season.

A lot of the blame has recently been placed on Luka Doncic and when the Slovenian was asked how much of it he puts on himself, he kept it real.

“A lot. I’m the leader of this team,” Doncic said. “The one to blame is me, so I take a lot.”

When you are the leader and the best player, you get a lot of the credit for the team’s success but at the same time, you have to accept the criticism when things aren’t going well. Stephen A. Smith recently called Luka the biggest problem in Dallas, while Kendrick Perkins blasted him for being out of shape and for his lack of accountability and leadership. To Luka’s credit, he is taking accountability here and displaying some good leadership.

The Mavericks, who are now 37-42 on the season, no longer control their own destiny when it comes to making the play-in tournament, but they still have a chance. If they win all three of their remaining games and the Oklahoma City Thunder fail to win their remaining two, then the Mavs will be in the play-in. Doncic, who is averaging 32.8 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 8.1 APG, and 1.4 SPG, needs to ensure they give themselves a chance, with both, his leadership and his play on the court.

Luka Doncic Admitted He Misses Jalen Brunson

While Doncic was undoubtedly the biggest reason why the Mavs were so successful in 2021-22, Jalen Brunson was a key contributor as well. His departure in the offseason was a big blow and the Mavericks will regret letting him go for a very long time.

Luka was asked during this media session about how much they miss Brunson and he admitted they miss him a lot. He went on to call Brunson an amazing player and an amazing guy. One can only wonder how differently this season might have panned out for the Mavs if he was still on the team.
