Mark Jackson Was The Only NBA Awards Voter Who Didn’t Have Nikola Jokic As An MVP Candidate

Mark Jackson didn't have Nikola Jokic as a top 5 MVP candidate.

Center Nikola Jokic is widely considered to be the best center in the league, highly regarded due to his offensive output and passing ability. He led the Denver Nuggets to the No. 1 seed and could end up getting to the NBA Finals this season.

There have been a lot of people that have suggested Nikola Jokic deserved to win the MVP award this season, and most voters at least had him as a top-5 candidate. However, Mark Jackson didn’t have Nikola Jokic on his MVP ballot at all, preferring to vote for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Donovan Mitchell in his stead.

There’s no doubt that this is an insane ballot from Mark Jackson. It will be interesting to see if he ends up addressing why he left off Nikola Jokic entirely, and it is clearly an unfair decision.

Nikola Jokic has averaged 30.6 PPG, 13.1 RPG, and 9.5 APG for the Denver Nuggets in the playoffs. It is clear that he is on a different level right now, and it is easy to see why many believe that he’s the best player in the world.

Tracy McGrady Previously Claimed That Nikola Jokic Was The MVP Over Joel Embiid

Tracy McGrady was previously asked about the MVP debate this season, and he claimed that Nikola Jokic was No. 1 and Joel Embiid No. 2. He noted that he leaned towards picking Jokic, pointing out that he was the No. 1 seed in the West without an All-Star as his second option.

“I have Jokic and Embiid one and two. I think they equally have an advantage to win it. But I’m leaning toward Jokic because he’s not playing with an All-Star, his team is No. 1 in the West, 29 triple-doubles, and to me, he gets everybody involved. He’s not a defensive player like Embiid, but I think the impact that he does so many other things that really equals out to what Embiid brings to his team. The man is incredible,” T-Mac said.

Joel Embiid is definitely a deserving winner of the 2022-23 MVP award, and it is good to see the superstar finally get his flowers. Still, this debate between Embiid and Jokic is seemingly never-ending, and the only way to solve this is if the two end up facing off in the NBA Finals.
