On the latest episode of the All The Smoke podcast, former NBA player Matt Barnes shared a wild story of what happened when he took a Toradol shot during the 2015 Playoffs.

“I got a Toradol story,” Barnes said. “I run into a Dwight Howard screen before the playoffs and completely f*** my right shoulder up so bad that I can’t lift it at all. Going right into the playoffs. So they’re like, either you can sit out or we can give you some Toradol.”

Barnes was a bit hesitant as he had never taken it before. Excessive use of Toradol, which is described as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, had also led to someone he knew developing liver problems which led to them retiring early from the NFL. Still, Barnes wanted to play and took the shot.

“I’m like ‘S***, I’ll give it a try,'” Barnes added. “They shot me in my a** with this Toradol like an hour before and I was Superman. Moving all around, guarding Kawhi (Leonard) just fine, jumping, dunking, shooting.”

While he was able to do all of this during the game against the San Antonio Spurs, Barnes encountered a bit of an issue right before it started.

“I always had a pregame situation where I go pee before the game,” Barnes stated. “Right before they do the announcements before they do the starting lineups, I’d run back out there. This time I’m going in there, I’m about to pee… I wet-farted myself, bro. Sharted.”

There were just three minutes left for the tip-off and Barnes had to do something fast. He used some toilet paper to clean himself and then dumped his shorts in a trashcan. Barnes then managed to get new shorts from the equipment manager’s bag and dashed onto the court. He missed the announcements but reached on time for the tip-off.

He had no time to shower, though, and Stephen Jackson hilariously stated he felt sorry for whoever had to guard Barnes on the night. It certainly wouldn’t have been a very pleasant experience. Barnes and his Los Angeles Clippers would eventually go on to beat the Spurs in seven games in that series.

LaMarcus Aldridge was the one who brought up the topic of Toradol here and he later stated that the NBA banned the drug the following season. Teams then switched to Celebrex, but Barnes said it does nothing.

Aldridge then joked that the league went from the very best to the worst. He was grateful they banned Toradol at the time, though, as he was using it too much, and it wasn’t good for him long-term.

The Toradol Controversy Last Year

In case you’re wondering where you’d heard about Toradol, the drug was at the center of a big controversy last year, the Gary Payton II trade. Payton’s trade to the Golden State Warriors was in serious jeopardy after a failed physical revealed a concerning injury.

It was reported that the Portland Trail Blazers had given Payton Toradol shots to play through injury and that the same was not relayed to the Warriors’ medical staff. Later, Payton’s agent denied he had taken any Toradol shots to play through pain. Still, there appeared to be a real chance this trade would get canceled, but the Warriors eventually decided against it, and Payton was back in the Bay.
