  • Jordan explains how playing on the road improved his concentration and minimized distractions, leading to some of his most memorable performances
  • Iconic games like the Flu Game and Last Shot were played on the road, where Jordan’s resilience and skill shone brightest
  • With three championship wins each on the road and at home, Jordan’s ability to thrive away from home arenas solidified his status as a basketball legend

Michael Jordan’s basketball prowess is legendary, but a lesser-known aspect of his career is his preference for playing on the road. Away games, he revealed, allowed him to concentrate better and focus on his craft without the distractions that come with home games.

In an interview with Stephen Curry at the 2021 Ryder Cup, Michael Jordan revealed why he loved playing on the road so much:

“You know the answer to that. I’d rather be on the road. I love playing on the road. It seems as though your concentration level is much, much better.”

“You know that you’re not expected to win so that you could have the opportunity to prove the unknown and a lot of times when you play at home, you let your hair down, you get relaxed, you see more friends, you see more family, you gotta worry about tickets, you gotta worry about so many different things.”

“So, I always love playing on the road, so it minimizes my thought process, and I can focus on my craft.”

Some of Jordan’s most iconic performances occurred on the road. His legendary “Flu Game” during the 1997 NBA Finals is a testament to his ability to deliver under adverse conditions. Battling food poisoning, he scored 38 points and led the Chicago Bulls to victory against the Utah Jazz.

Another monumental moment was his final shot as a Bull in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the same opponent. His game-winning shot on the road secured his sixth championship ring.

The Flu Game

In a defining moment of sports history, Michael Jordan’s iconic “Flu Game” during the 1997 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz showcased his indomitable spirit and determination. Battling a severe flu-like illness, Jordan’s unwavering commitment to his team led him to take the court despite his weakened state.

From the first whistle, it was clear that Jordan was not his usual self. His movements were labored, and his energy was visibly drained. Yet, in a display of sheer determination, he pushed through the exhaustion.

With every shot, every defensive play, and every drive to the basket, Jordan showcased his immense heart. Despite visibly struggling, he pushed through exhaustion, scoring 38 points, securing 7 rebounds, making 5 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block.

His pivotal three-pointer and crucial layup in the game’s final moments showcased his trademark clutchness, leading the Chicago Bulls to a vital victory. Jordan’s determination to perform at his best despite his illness embodies his commitment to the game and his team.
