Michael Jordan was one of the rare players who was an excellent player from day one in the NBA. He was drafted using the third overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984 NBA Draft.

Most fans were patiently waiting for his debut in the league, and he didn’t disappoint as he had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists vs. the Washington Bullets. However, Jordan’s debut could have resulted in a gruesome injury following a dunk attempt.

Jordan failed to dunk the basketball and fell back-first on the court. Following the awkward fall, Jordan stayed on the floor for a few seconds, obviously in some serious agony.

Fortunately, the Chicago Bulls legend avoided a serious injury while leading the team to a 109-93 victory.

Michael Jordan Had A Memorable Rookie Season

A 21-year-old Michael Jordan didn’t take a lot of time to get adjusted to playing the NBA. He averaged 28.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 5.9 APG, and 2.4 SPG on 51.5% shooting during his rookie year.

Jordan also led the Bulls to the playoffs as they finished the season with a 38-44 record. But the Bulls were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. They lost 1-3 vs. the Milwaukee Bucks.

Speaking of MJ as a rookie, he won Rookie of the Year, made All-NBA Second Team, and finished sixth in the NBA MVP race.

On top of that, Jordan slowly but surely developed a voice in the locker room and took his first steps to become a leader for the Bulls.

Had Jordan picked up a serious injury on his debut, fans would have been stripped of such a phenomenal rookie season. Moreover, Michael Jordan’s career could have gone downhill even before it started.

MJ may have avoided an injury in his rookie season, but he couldn’t in his sophomore season. After taking a hard fall vs. the Golden State Warriors, Jordan broke a small bone in his left foot and missed 64 games.
