NBA fans just couldn’t agree upon a trio that could take the fight to Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant in a 3v3.
“I’m taking any team with prime Shaquille O’Neal.”
“To match positions? Shaq (no center), Stephen Curry Curry (no perimeter), Kevin Durant (even Kobe said he can’t guard that).”
“Dirk, T-Mac, and KD. How are they gonna beat them in a 3v3??”
“Curry, Kawhi Leonard, and Kevin Garnett”
“Shaq, Curry, and Durant. Maybe.”
“Why do people keep putting Steph’s name in this? Who is he gonna guard after he shoots???”
“Nobody.”
“The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
All of those combinations are interesting, but I don’t see how this trio gets stopped. Prime Shaquille O’Neal is the only player who can swing this debate in the opposite direction, as even prime LeBron can’t guard him in the post.
I would also lean towards Kevin Durant over Stephen Curry because Durant will have a defensive upside with size and wingspan to frustrate the wing trio he’s facing. His ability to score by shooting above them is also a massive advantage.
Instead of picking a guard who’ll have to be guarded by Kobe or MJ, we could put Larry Bird next to KD and Shaq to complete the optimum three. There’s a sample size of KD and Kobe matchups and Jordan and Bird matchups to say that would be a closely-fought battle. With Shaq at the center and prime LeBron on the other side, it’ll come down to the wire to see which team wins this fictional matchup of GOATs.
