Jayson Tatum ascended to superstar status in the playoffs last season, and even though the season ended in disappointment as they lost in the NBA Finals, there hasn’t been any slippage in his play. He has led the Boston Celtics to the best record in the NBA, and after a couple of rough showings, he put in a statement performance on Tuesday night.

Tatum torched the Los Angeles Lakers as he scored 44 points while shooting 15-29 from the field. The Celtics got a 122-118 win in overtime thanks to his exploits, and after the game, Tatum boldly claimed that he feels he is the best player when he steps on the court. Hoop Central on Twitter posed a question on if Tatum is the front-runner for MVP at this point, and fans were quite divided.

“curry is #1, he’s a close 2nd tho ngl”

“Giannis is better in every statistical category and only 1 game back from the Celtics”

“TRUE and it’s not close”

“False, Luka easily the Most Valuable Player. Celtics still elite without him, mavs are nothing without luka”

“By a mile”

“False, don’t forget about the game against the warriors and clippers just one game and he’s again the front runner? Lmao”

“embiid is first”

“I question anybody who doesn’t think Luka is the MVP right now.”

“True. Best team in the league, with the best 2 way player in the league.”

“Giannis, Luka, Embiid are the frontrunners”

“Damn true, why is this even a question”

“He’s the frontrunner but he’s not a lock. Before today he actually hadn’t played well lately”

“he already was. but he needed this one to keep it that way after 2 stinkers.”

“If Doncic and Giannis didn’t exist then absolutely”

“He is but zion creeping up”

“Best record. Best player on that team. Yup.”

“Hell no lol he went missing against the clippers and warriors”

“I’ll give it to Giannis still but close”

“True for anyone who knows ball & cares about defense”

“Its between him and Curry. None else is close.”

There are a lot of strong contenders for the award at this point, so it is difficult to pick just one as the clear frontrunner. As some pointed out, Tatum didn’t play well against the Warriors and Clippers, which has hurt his case a bit. Still, there is a long way to go, and all of these guys who are in the running, like Tatum, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, and Joel Embiid will have a chance to separate themselves from the pack.

Jayson Tatum Spoke On The Ime Udoka Situation

As if losing the NBA Finals wasn’t bad enough, the Celtics players also had to deal with the whole Ime Udoka situation. Udoka was suspended by the team before this season for a violation of team rules, and some felt that the Celtics might lose their way a bit without their head coach.

Tatum admitted that there’s still a lot of confusion surrounding the whole situation and called it extremely frustrating. Fortunately, it doesn’t look like the team has missed a beat under interim head coach Joe Mazzulla, and he might well get the full-time job at some point with the way things are going.
