Luka Doncic has been enjoying the best season of his young career so far. The Slovenian phenom has been among the MVP frontrunners through the first half of the season, putting up monster numbers and leading the league in scoring. He has led the Dallas Mavericks to the 4th seed in the West without a co-star, and his offensive game is better than perhaps any other player in the league.

However, despite the incredible 60-point performance and all the different triple-doubles, there is one issue with Luka’s game that has persisted. The Mavericks star is far from a stellar defender, and at times that can get exposed. And in the loss against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night, fans noticed enough lapses on the defensive end from Doncic that a compilation went up on Reddit.

Doncic got cooked quite a few times, with guards blowing by him to get an easy lay-up. On some possessions, it simply looked like he wasn’t trying, which is something that many fans can’t bring themselves to forgive.

Many Fans Called Luka Doncic Out: “He Needs To Stop Playing Non-Embarrassing Defense”

Luka Doncic was the only player for the Dallas Mavericks that showed up, and that only happened in the second half. Regardless, he had 43 points and 11 rebounds. But the defensive lapses ended up costing the team, so that’s what quite a few players harped on about.

“Bro really jumped out of the way from the drive and gave him a non contested layup.”

“Looked like a slide by animation on 2K.”

“I get taking a breather for a couple plays but dude has gotta start playing non-embarrassing D!”

“Ball watching like my teammates when I play 2K online.”

“Looking like Jokic in the postseason.”

“That’s thoughtful of him to let clippers zoom by.”

“I was told he was the next LeBron.”

“Man, what is he even doing there?”

“Luka really needs to start playing some defense.”

“This isn’t a great look for him, needs to contribute on both ends.”

The narrative that Luka Doncic doesn’t play defense is a tired one, he has been quite good at different times this season. He’s far from being the best defender in the league, but to take a few clips and label him as the worst is also taking things too far. The Mavericks need to find a way to lessen his load on offense though, and if they can manage that, then games like these will likely become less common.
