Prior to his getting traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell was the face of the Utah Jazz franchise. Donovan Mitchell spent five years with the Jazz, averaging 23.9 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 4.5 APG for the team in the regular season.
There is no doubt that Donovan Mitchell still has a lot of fans in Utah, and he was fairly involved with the community. Despite this impact on the fanbase and in the state, Donovan Mitchell doesn’t believe that the Utah Jazz should retire his jersey, as he thinks that he did not do enough to warrant that. Marc Spears of Andscape relayed the news.
There are 12 numbers retired in Jazz history. But even with his impact on and off the court in Utah, the former Jazz star does not believe his No. 45 jersey deserves to be hanging in the rafters retired at Vivint Arena.
“I don’t think I did enough,” Mitchell told Andscape. “I hold myself to a high standard. Now, other people may feel that it should. I’d be happy and forever grateful, honored and blessed for sure for that to happen. But I don’t think I’ve done enough in five years to have my jersey up there with Karl, John [Stockton], Pistol Pete and Darrell Griffith. I got a long way in my career to go to continue to be better.”
Only time will tell if the Utah Jazz do end up retiring Donovan Mitchell’s jersey. Though he may have had a solid few years with the franchise, he never managed to lead the team past the second round of the playoffs. Though he is clearly a talented player, Donovan Mitchell simply wasn’t able to do enough to get his jersey retired with the team.
Donovan Mitchell Believes He And The Cleveland Cavaliers Can Win A Championship
Though he may have left the team that drafted him, Donovan Mitchell is in a good situation with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In fact, he has recently stated his belief that the team can win a championship this year.
Being to the Finals four times in a row is greatness. Kevin’s been a part of that and he’s the last one left of that group. For us, we’re not LeBron James. But as a collective we can ultimately get there if we do it as a group. And we want to bring back another championship for this city.
Our fans are passionate. We have the skill. We have the ability to do that. But we have a way to go. We have to do the work, but we play with that intention set. We don’t play to say, ‘Oh, let’s make it to the playoffs or the second round.’ Our goal is to win the championship and play to the best of our ability. The city has seen it once and they’ll hopefully see it again.
There’s no doubt that Donovan Mitchell has good reason to believe the Cleveland Cavaliers can win at the highest level. They are a talented squad, with multiple All-Star level players.
Of course, the Eastern Conference is going to be very competitive. There are a number of elite teams that stand in the Cavaliers’ way, such as the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks. However, the Cleveland Cavaliers have the talent to deal with any challenge, and we’ll see whether they can get to the Finals this year,
