Jordan Poole was the breakout star for the Golden State Warriors last year, and along the way to stardom, he’s picked up some prize learnings from the team’s veterans.
The guard was the third-highest scorer last season, averaging 25.4 points with 3.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists, and his exploits saw him earn a plush four-year $140 million contract.
This comes at the cost of the front office perhaps letting go of one of their veterans in Draymond Green or Andrew Wiggins next season, but with one eye on the future, the move cements the theory that Poole will be the face of the franchise — a fact that he knows and has embraced.
Jordan Poole Reveals What It Takes To Earn The Trust Of The Seasoned Warriors Veterans
In a recent interview with Yahoo! Poole explained what it took to earn the trust of the veterans and why it mattered.
His words suggest that the franchise’s leadership in the future is not in jeopardy while also speaking volumes about his development as a player.
“It wasn’t that these older players, people who have been in the game before, aren’t willing to give you answers. It’s like they’re just not gonna give them to someone who doesn’t care.
They put their hard time, their blood, sweat and tears, years of sacrifice, stress, so they don’t want to just give away their gems, the things that have made them so successful in their careers, to just anybody. They gotta know that you’re willing to go the extra mile. You’re willing to sacrifice yourself.”
It wasn’t the greatest of starts for Poole this season. Off the court, he was embroiled in a dustup with Green and wasn’t his fluent self when the season started. However, he’s hit his straps, averaging 17.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists this season.
The Warriors will need more from Poole as he increasingly becomes their primary offensive option over the course of the season.
The defending champions have been wobbly at best and are placed 11th in the Western Conference standings with a 13-13 record. After two consecutive losses, they take on the formidable Boston Celtics, and for Poole, it’s a chance to apply those learning to good use.
