Kendrick Perkins was known during his playing days for being a rough screen-setter, physical rebounder that would get on the face of the strongest big men in the world any given day. His contributions in the defensive end were quite welcome during his prime, for sure, but it seems like he’s suffering from that syndrome that makes former players believe he was better than he actually was.
And now that he’s found a second career as a TV analyst, ‘Perk’ has been firing hot takes left and right any given night to drive fans completely nuts.
His latest masterpiece came when ESPN asked its experts to rank the greatest NBA teams of all time. Obviously, this is a subjective list and the order may change, but there have been several squads that have made a strong case for their consideration here.
And while most experts chose the same teams but slightly changed the order, Perkins really brought his A-Game and put together the most bizarre ranking he could’ve think of.
At number 1, he got the 1996-97 Chicago Bulls. 72-10 record plus a Championship and the greatest player of all time, hard to argue with that logic. Second, he got the 2000-01 Los Angeles Lakers, so clearly he’s a fan of the triangle. Shaq, Kobe, NBA Champions, we’re all good so far.
But things really started getting downhill since spot number 3, where he chose the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons who upset the ‘Fab Four’ Lakers. A team with one All-Star and that wasn’t precisely a treat to the eyes and that by no means was a better Pistons team that the one’s Isiah Thomas played on.
At four, he chose the 2007-08 Boston Celtics, a solid team, for sure, but it was a team that he was on. They won 66 games and beat Kobe and the Lakers in the Finals, but how were they better than, say, the 1986 Celtics? (which most of his colleagues chose).
And last, but not least, Perk put the cherry on top of the sundae by doing what he’s been doing best since retirement: lauding LeBron James. At number 5, he chose the 2012-13 Miami Heat, for sure, the team that barely beat the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.

No 73-9 Warriors, no Showtime Lakers, no Bird’s Celtics. Nothing. This is his list and he may have enough arguments to back it up, but let’s not pretend like it wasn’t another one of his hot takes.
