Scottie Pippen recently discussed the controversial exclusion of Isiah Thomas from the 1992 Dream Team during an appearance on the PBD Podcast, shedding light on the delicate dynamics that played a significant role in forming one of basketball’s most iconic squads. His remarks emphasize that Thomas’s exclusion was not solely the result of one individual but a combination of relationships and team chemistry considerations.

“I think it was a known fact, that he wasn’t on the team. I can’t say why he wasn’t on the team. I can’t even point, best say that any individual put him off the team.”

“Basketball is a game built on relationships and that team was put together based on relationships, players that they felt could get along, players that they felt could play together and players that they felt like could contribute in the right way to win a gold medal.”

“Dominique Wilkins was left off of that team and I personally feel as bad as anyone, to see a guy who I idolized, who I looked up to, who I guarded, who I defended numerous amount of times, not be a part of that team.”

“But, I didn’t want to sacrifice my seat to give it up to him, but with all respect, I felt like he deserved to be on that team as well not just Isiah.”

Pippen explains that Isiah Thomas was excluded from the 1992 Dream Team due to his strained relationships with some of its biggest stars. According to Pippen, Team USA was carefully constructed to maintain harmony among the players. Despite Chuck Daly, the Pistons’ head coach, also coaching the Dream Team, it appears that decisions about the roster were influenced by those above him, prioritizing personal relationships over pure basketball merit.

Pippen also highlighted that Thomas wasn’t the only notable omission. Dominique Wilkins, another NBA great, was left off the roster despite his stellar credentials. While Pippen acknowledged feeling bad about Wilkins’s exclusion, he candidly admitted he wasn’t willing to sacrifice his own spot on the team.

Scottie Pippen explained that Isiah Thomas was clearly left off the 1992 Dream Team due to his strained relationships with its biggest stars. He added that Team USA was carefully assembled to maintain harmony among the players. Despite Chuck Daly being both the Pistons’ coach and the head coach of the Dream Team, it appears that decisions about the roster were influenced by higher authorities, prioritizing personal dynamics over merit.

Isiah Thomas has long speculated that Michael Jordan played a pivotal role in his exclusion. The rivalry between the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls during the late 1980s and early 1990s was one of the fiercest in NBA history, with Thomas’s “Bad Boys” Pistons employing a physical style of play that many, including Jordan, despised.

Although Jordan has denied directly orchestrating Thomas’s omission, a recording revealed that he had expressed reluctance to play on the Dream Team if Thomas was included. Charles Barkley, another member of the Dream Team, has corroborated that interpersonal dynamics played a significant role in shaping the roster.

The Dream Team, featuring legends such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, cruised to the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, winning games by an average margin of 44 points. Despite his absence, Thomas remained a class act, rooting for Team USA’s success.

Interestingly, Thomas later remarked that the publicity surrounding his exclusion arguably brought him more attention than being part of the team would have. Still, his absence remains one of the most debated topics in basketball history.

Ultimately, Scottie Pippen’s comments highlight that the Dream Team’s composition was as much about harmony and team dynamics as it was about talent. While Thomas was undoubtedly one of the greatest point guards of his era, the complexities of interpersonal relationships and the shadow of past rivalries likely sealed his fate. His omission, however, has only added to the lore and legend of the 1992 Dream Team.
