Skip Bayless is already planning life after LeBron James retires from the game of basketball. The analyst has been known for criticizing fan favorites, and that's not stopping anytime soon.
Bayless has made Luka Doncic one of his targets and didn't hesitate to take a shot at the Slovenian player after the latter signed 5-year, $207 contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks.
On Tuesday's edition of FS1's Undisputed, Bayless went off on Doncic, claiming people shouldn't compare Luka with Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird.
"I don't know if you actually remember Larry Bird," Skip told Shannon Sharpe, via B92. "If he were your favorite player, you'd honor him by not even bringing him with this kid into the same conversation. 'Baby Bird' is 'maybe' Bird at best. He can't shoot a flick and I can prove it with stats. He can't shoot from 3 and can't shoot from the free throws. He's a career 33% 3-point shooter. Is that Larry Bird?"
"He is a career 74% free-throw shooter. It's horrendously bad. That is horrible for a player of this caliber. And in the playoffs, it got worse and worse. I watched this man shot airballs from the free-throw line. Did you think Larry Bird ever shot a single airball from the free-throw line? Because I'm willing to bet all my life savings that he never airballed a free throw in an NBA game. He [Luka] airballs free throws in playoff games. He frequently airballs 3-point shots."
Moreover, he criticized Luka for failing to take the Mavericks to compete in the NBA playoff. He recalled the team's past two playoff series, where the Los Angeles Clippers eliminated them in six and seven games, respectively.
"What did we see happening against the Clippers? Obviously, he lost against the Clippers in his first playoff two years ago, in the bubble, and everybody said, 'oh, Porzingis was hurt.' Then, in this playoff series, he told Porzingis 'you're out of the offense. I got it, I am the offense.' A Porzingis who averaged 16 shots during the regular season, got 10 shots only. Luka Doncic had a 2-0 lead with two home games in Dallas. They go 2-0 and on a Friday night Game 3, they go up 32-19 in the 1st quarter, that's a 19-point lead. What if I gave Larry Bird a 2-0 lead with a 19-point lead in Game 3 at home with a Game 4 at home? He would bury you. "
"Luka Doncic, as the primary ballhandler, as the superstar, as the pre-season MVP favorite, loses Game 3 by 10 at home and proceeds to lose Game 4 two days later by 25 points at home."
In the end, Skip admitted that Luka's new contract is huge, and he's in an excellent position to be one of the faces of the league. But, as of right now, the controversial analyst isn't sold on Doncic.
The 22-year-old must show more to convince Bayless that he's one of the best players in the world and deserves all the praise that fans and other analysts have given him since he entered the league.
