The 2024-25 NBA season is finally upon us and we are excited to welcome the start of the new year with two excellent matchups. Opening night starts off with Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves taking on LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers before the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics take on the new-look New York Knicks led by Karl-Anthony Towns. With an entire 82-game schedule starting, opening night will give us a glimpse of what is to come from four of the most talented teams in the NBA.
Knicks Could Surprise Celtics
Gametime: Celtics vs. Knicks, Tuesday, 7:30 PM EST
The New York Knicks enter the 2024-25 season with one of the most exciting rosters in the Eastern Conference. With the addition of Karl-Anthony Towns, the Knicks now boast a star-studded lineup that includes Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart, creating a dynamic and versatile core that could compete with any team.
Towns will be critical in this matchup, as his size and skillset make him a significant advantage against a Boston Celtics team that will be without Kristaps Porzingis, who is out for several months with an injury. The absence of Porzingis will leave a noticeable gap in the Celtics’ interior defense, and the Knicks will look to exploit this mismatch early on.
Championship hangovers aren’t something to worry too much about with this experienced team, but the loss of Porzingis could make the matchup more competitive than expected. The Celtics’ All-Star core, including the ever-reliable Jrue Holiday and Derrick White as established vets, will still need time to find a rhythm, especially against a Knicks team hungry to prove itself from the start. The Knicks want to win a championship and they will have a hot start to the game and the Celtics will have an uphill battle early.
In a down-to-the-wire game, expect the Knicks to seize the opportunity and take advantage of the Celtics’ interior vulnerability. Towns could be a difference-maker alongside Brunson, overcoming the superstar talents of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to kick off the regular season. Expect Tatum, Brown, and the Celtics to bounce back quickly in their second game of the season, but the Knicks will have the first laugh.
Prediction: New York Knicks def. Boston Celtics 117-116
Lakers Start The Season Strong
Gametime: Lakers vs. Timberwolves, Tuesday, 10:00 PM EST
The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to kick off the season with a statement win, and they have every reason to believe they can do just that. LeBron James, now in the twilight of his career, remains one of the top players in the league, and his partnership with Anthony Davis continues to be a formidable duo.
The Lakers are well-rested after a solid offseason, and the core of James and Davis should set the tone early in the game. The Minnesota Timberwolves, on the other hand, are integrating key new pieces, most notably Julius Randle, who joins Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. Randle’s fit alongside Gobert remains an early-season experiment, and the Timberwolves could experience growing pains as they figure out spacing and roles.
Naz Reid will likely return to his role as a fire-starter off the bench and reigning Sixth Man of the Year and that will be a strong light in Minnesota’s start to the season, but all eyes will be on Anthony Edwards and if he can capitalize with his new teammate.
As great as Edwards will be this season, he will need help. Randle’s transition into the Timberwolves system might not be seamless, as he adjusts to playing alongside Gobert, a very different style of big man compared to what he had in New York. That slight chemistry confusion won’t work against the experienced Lakers led by The King. The expected rookie debut of Rob Dillingham will be an exciting story to follow in this game, but it ultimately won’t make a difference either.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis’ experience and chemistry should carry the day, especially when Dalton Knecht is coming off a sensational preseason performance where he dropped 35 points on eight made three-pointers and will have his official debut. Knecht could end up draining three or four three-pointers to give the Lakers some extra spacing and that bodes well for LeBron driving to the lane and finishing against the Timberwolves.
As talented defensively as Gobert and Randle are, they won’t be able to stop the freight train that is LeBron James. Davis will also be able to handle the thinner Wolves who will have growing pains. LeBron will remind everyone why he remains a top-10 player, most likely posting a near double-double, and Davis will anchor the defense to gain an advantage over Gobert.
With some extra juice from D’Angelo Russell (who will aim to fight for his Lakers career) and Austin Reaves, the Lakers will have just enough to come away in the fourth quarter. Don’t be surprised if we see a cameo from Bronny James as well, which would add extra excitement to the night and fuel an energetic 101-97 victory for the Lakers.
Prediction: Los Angeles Lakers def. Minnesota Timberwolves 101-97
