NBA Rumors: Miami Heat Reportedly Want To Sign DeMarcus Cousins This Summer

DeMarcus Cousins could find a new team in the league this summer, according to recent reports. Even though he’s expected to re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason, that’s not the only option the big man has to continue his career.

His free agent status makes him a very good target for several other teams, including the Miami Heat, as the latest rumors are suggesting.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald mentioned Cousins’ situation on Tuesday, given how he was cut by the Lakers to make room for buyout market signee Markieff Morris, who had last played for the Detroit Pistons.

Jackson suggested the Heat already made an attempt to sign Cousins last summer and their interest in the player is still there at this point. However, he points out that there is “no indication” that the 29-year-old big man is “looking to leave Southern California.”

“Cousins, who hasn’t played this season because of a torn ACL in his left knee sustained last August, continued rehabbing with the Lakers at their facility on Tuesday, and there’s nothing to preclude the Lakers from signing him before the playoffs if he’s healthy,” Jackson noted.

Boogie has seen his level and value in the league decrease because of injuries. He has been sidelined by a succession of serious injuries over the past two years, including a torn Achilles tendon (January 2018), torn quad (April 2019), and torn ACL (August 2019).

Bleacher Report explains that Cousins has established a good relationship with the Lakers’ two superstars, LeBron James and Anthony Davis. They suggest that given the fact he won’t get much more than a veteran’s minimum contract in the 2020 offseason, Cousins should return to the Lakers, play for a title, and return to the free-agent market in 2021 after rebuilding his value.
