NBA Rumors: Michael Jordan Criticized For His Ownership Style Of The Charlotte Hornets

Michael Jordan is widely recognized as the greatest basketball player ever. Looking back on his career, and his amazing amount of influence he had at the time, it’s impossible to ignore the enormous legacy he left behind in the NBA.

Of course, it’s a legacy that he continues to build on, even today.

As the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets, he is being charged with bringing relevance to the franchise.

Unfortunately, it seems MJ’s leadership style as an owner isn’t living up to the standards set by the NBA’s inner circle. Here’s the report by Marc Stein of the New York Times:

Jordan is criticized in league circles for his detached ownership style, and for filling his front office and executive leadership team with people from his personal network—although he is not unique on either point.

Basically, the word is that MJ is a rather absent owner, always away from the team and not really being involved in the recruitment of free agents.

Whether or not that has anything to do with Charlotte’s difficulty bringing in top-tier talent is arguable, but it is worth noting that the Hornets are coming off one of their best seasons in years.

With Gordon Hayward and LaMelo Ball, the Hornets were competing for a playoff spot, going as far as the play-in tournament before being eliminated by Indiana.

Their future certainly looks bright, but it remains to be seen what kind of influence Jordan will have.
