Golden State Warriors Have Prioritized The Pursuit Of Paul George

It’s the end of an era for the Golden State Warriors as the 2024 NBA offseason enters a critical period. Instead of working to bring back their own, the latest report from NBA insider Marc Stein suggests they are totally devoted to making a move for Paul George.

“Golden State has this week prioritized the trade pursuit of the LA Clippers’ Paul George above all other business,” said Marc Stein. “Yet that has only increased the chill between Thompson and the club after months of spotty and now scant contact between the sides. It will take time for many NBA watchers to get used to the idea of Klay Thompson in a different uniform if he is indeed prepared to leave the Golden State Warriors in free agency. The signs, though, have frankly never pointed more strongly to it.”

Klay, 34, has played all 11 years of his career with the Warriors. As a 5x All-Star, 4x champion, and one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, Klay has reached legendary status as a Warrior and he’s built bonds with the people there that can never be undone.

But it’s no secret that patience has been wearing thin for both sides amid fierce contract negotiations. Klay, who is looking for a sizeable payout over multiple years, has been on a steep decline in recent years in regards. to his efficiency and his effectiveness defense. He never wanted to leave the Warriors but he may be forced to go elsewhere to get the kind of deal he’s after this summer. Thompson is described as being hurt by the failed contract extension talks and the word on the street is that things will never be the same.

This is the price that the Warriors are willing to pay for a chance at 34-year-old Paul George. As a star three-and-D wing with playoff experience, George is exactly the kind of player who would re-open the Warriors’ championship window. He, Draymond Green, and Stephen Curry could dominate the West and revive the franchise after years of failure. Through 74 games for the Clippers, George averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game on 47.1% shooting.

For now, it’s unknown how serious George is about leaving the Clippers but the Warriors are said to be in the mix to add him to their roster. If GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. is willing to pay the price of adding another proven superstar, the Lakers could become a real threat in the West behind their star-studded roster and championship coach Steve Kerr.

Regardless of how everything plays out this summer, the Warriors will have some big decisions to make and it’s likely to set the stage for the next wave of title contenders. If they keep Klay, they get to keep their beloved together for a while longer. But if they lose out on Paul George, it could cost them their last chance at a title in the Stephen Curry era.
