Houston Rockets Unlikely To Pursue De’Aaron Fox Before Trade Deadline

The NBA trade market got a new big fish to chase after as Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox is reportedly angling to be traded to a new team before the trade deadline passes on February 6.

The Houston Rockets were an assumed interested team in Fox’s services when rumors of him potentially being available surfaced. However, Marc Stein has made it clear that the Rockets are unlikely to acquire Fox mid-season as they’re motivated to see what their current core can achieve this season.

“There will be inevitable trade connections made between the Rockets and De’Aaron Fox, but league sources tell @TheSteinLine that Houston’s in-season intentions remain unchanged: Let this current group see how far it can go.”

There have been murmurs of Fox wanting to be traded since he declined a contract extension in the offseason, with the Rockets emerging as a likely destination. His defensive output matched what the Rockets want from their players while he would be a major upgrade on current starting point guard Fred VanVleet, who could be a free agent in the summer.

Fox is averaging 25.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.2 assists this season.

An acquisition like Fox would catapult the Rockets into being contenders, as they’re already the No. 2 seed in the West with a 32-14 record. However, this team is in no rush to acquire star players this season given the development of their young players and how in-sync the roster has been this season.

San Antonio Spurs Leading The Race; Potential Miami Heat Interest

The leaders in the pursuit of De’Aaron Fox are already being declared as the San Antonio Spurs.

“Across the league, the San Antonio Spurs — and the prospect of pairing Fox with the future face of the league in Victor Wembanyama — have long been seen as the likely destination of choice. Fox, who is averaging 25.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2024-25, and Victor Wembanyama would be quite the pairing. Kings insider James Ham has also reported that San Antonio is where the guard would like to go”

Fox would be a great guard complement to Victor Wembanyama and might be one of the better co-stars the Spurs can make a move for. Fox is expected to have San Antonio as one of his prime destinations in a potential trade, with the franchise also having the assets to send the Kings a solid return.

The Miami Heat have often been considered a potential Fox landing spot if he ever decided to leave the Kings, and this trade request could play a part in the current Jimmy Butler trade saga.

Given the Kings were interested in Butler, somehow finding a way to acquire him and remaining competitive while Fox goes to Miami could be the Heat’s dream outcome right now. Unfortunately, it’s hard to imagine the Heat giving up future assets to acquire Fox while also losing Butler, and a straight swap makes no sense for the Kings.
