Once Kyrie Irving handed in a trade request to the Brooklyn Nets, everyone assumed that a move to the Los Angeles Lakers might well be on the cards. There seemed to be mutual interest between Kyrie and the Lakers this past offseason, so it made sense that they were one of the first teams linked with him here as well.

Kyrie might well be on the move to Los Angeles, but it might not be to the Lakers. Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Saturday that the Los Angeles Clippers have entered the Kyrie sweepstakes, as they look to make a splash before the deadline.

The Clippers do have a few things working for them here. They have one of the deepest rosters in the NBA, so they have plenty of assets they can potentially include in a trade package and head coach Tyronn Lue did coach Kyrie on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Athletic’s Law Murray is now reporting that the Clippers have already made a move to land Irving.

Sources tell @TheAthletic that the LA Clippers have made a strong offer to the Brooklyn Nets for Kyrie Irving, and that head coach Tyronn Lue is open to coaching Irving again after the two won a championship with Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.

“Sources tell @TheAthletic that the LA Clippers have made a strong offer to the Brooklyn Nets for Kyrie Irving, and that head coach Tyronn Lue is open to coaching Irving again after the two won a championship with Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.”

Brian Windhorst had stated previously that the Clippers were skeptical about trading for Kyrie but that they would have the kind of assets that the Nets would want. It appears that the Clippers have decided to go for it, as they look to finally win that elusive title.

NBA Radio Host Says Teams Should Stay Away From Kyrie Irving

The Clippers and Lakers aren’t the only teams interested in Kyrie, as the likes of the Mavericks and Suns are also interested. Mike Francesa, however, stated that any team which would want to take a chance on Kyrie is out of their mind. As he went on to say, teams will inevitably keep giving you chances as long as you have talent and that is the case with Kyrie, despite all the issues he has caused in the past.

From the point of view of the Clippers, trading for Irving would help them form quite an impressive big 3 as he would team up with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. If Kyrie can stay out of trouble, the Clippers would be the clear-cut favorite to win the West but the question obviously with him, is whether he will stay out of trouble. The Clippers certainly seem to think he will, especially with Lue around to keep him in check.
