The Miami Heat are a team that has been trending upward as of late. They are currently the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference and are slightly above .500 with a 25-22 record. The East is definitely an extremely competitive conference this year, and perhaps a good move for the Miami Heat would involve them making a trade to try and get ahead of the pack.

Previously, it has been reported that the Miami Heat have some interest in Minnesota Timberwolves point guard D’Angelo Russell. He would likely be easy to get for the team, as he is on an expiring contract. Below, we have created a potential trade scenario that sends D’Angelo Russell to the Heat.

Miami Heat Receive: D’Angelo Russell

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: Kyle Lowry, 2028 Second-Round Pick (MIA), 2029 Second-Round Pick (MIA), 2026 Second-Round Pick (Via OKC, DAL, Or PHI)

There is no doubt that the Heat would be acquiring a legitimate difference-maker in D’Angelo Russell, and this is a trade that could benefit them immediately this season. Here is why this trade should happen from the perspective of both the Heat and the Timberwolves.

The Miami Heat Acquire A Dynamic Offensive Point Guard

Even though Kyle Lowry was once an All-Star level player with the Toronto Raptors, it is clear that he isn’t the same player he once was. Though he is still a solid passer, his defense, scoring, and shooting have definitely declined over the last few years.  Lowry has not been the difference-maker that the Miami Heat expected, and perhaps a dynamic offensive point guard like D’Angelo Russell could end up being the piece to help the Miami Heat take the next step as a team.

As of right now, D’Angelo Russell profiles as a versatile scorer as well as a decent floor general. He has been the No. 3 scoring option for the Minnesota Timberwolves when the team has been fully healthy but has had to up his offensive production since Karl-Anthony Towns went out with injury. He has been on a tear over the last 25 games with the team, averaging 19.7 PPG, 2.6 RPG, and 5.9 APG while also shooting a blistering 41.2% from beyond the arc. He would be a solid acquisition for the Miami Heat and would definitely help improve their poor offense. Notably, Russell has a reputation as a good performer in the clutch, and he would be able to take some of the offensive pressure off Jimmy Butler in the fourth quarter.

Though there is obviously the possibility that D’Angelo Russell will walk for nothing at the end of the season, this is still a worthwhile acquisition for the Miami Heat. He would give them another consistent offensive player, and he is clearly a better player than Kyle Lowry as of right now. If Russell decides to re-sign with the Heat, then this deal will look even better in the future. They wouldn’t have to give up much either in this scenario, as the second-round picks involved are not highly valuable. Losing Kyle Lowry’s veteran presence and leadership could hurt, but the risk is absolutely worth it. The team’s goal should be maximizing Jimmy Butler while he is still playing at a high level, and that is exactly what they would be doing with this move.

The Minnesota Timberwolves Ensure They Get A Return For D’Angelo Russell

For the Minnesota Timberwolves, this trade is simply about getting some sort of return back for an expiring contract. D’Angelo Russell has already thrown shade at the team amidst his being involved in trade rumors. Perhaps it is best for the Timberwolves to part ways with the point guard.

In this trade, the key return for the Minnesota Timberwolves would obviously be Kyle Lowry. He isn’t necessarily an elite point guard, but he could provide valuable veteran experience and leadership on a younger team like the Minnesota Timberwolves. Lowry has been through a number of playoff runs, has been an All-Star, and has won a championship in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors. He has seen it all in the league, and perhaps having the stability of a proven veteran will help the Timberwolves reach the next level as a team.

The second-round draft picks involved in this deal wouldn’t necessarily be the best draft compensation. However, they can still be used to draft gems in the second round or used in another trade as filler. The Timberwolves have had some success in terms of getting productive players such as Jaylen Nowell and Naz Reid from the second round or after they go undrafted, and perhaps those second-round picks can still be of use to them in the future.

Overall, this deal would get the Minnesota Timberwolves, a solid veteran with some low-value draft picks. This is far from the worst return for D’Angelo Russell, and it’ll be interesting to see if they will consider making a deal with the Miami Heat.

This Could Be A Championship-Winning Trade For The Miami Heat

For the Miami Heat, the time is now or never. Jimmy Butler is still playing at a high level, while Bam Adebayo has grown into being a consistent double-double machine. On top of that, Tyler Herro is having a career year. It is time to go all-in on this team, especially considering they are in a playoff position right now and were one win away from the NBA Finals last season.

D’Angelo Russell is a player that would immediately improve the talent level of the Miami Heat and make the team’s life much easier on the offensive end with his scoring and playmaking. He is a difference-making player and could take the team from simply being good to being championship-caliber.

It remains to be seen if the two teams will end up discussing a deal with a similar framework. This trade makes sense from the perspectives of both franchises, and we’ll see what ends up happening in the future.
