The Los Angeles Lakers have a chance of acquiring veteran Eric Gordon from the Houston Rockets. Safe to say, that will be one good move if the Lakers can pull it off.
Los Angeles is one of the teams looking to add some shooting and defensive talent to their roster, and the trade window gives them ample options to choose from. On that note, a proposed theory sends two of the Lakers players to Houston for Gordon.
Per The Ringer’s Michael Pina, the Lakers could benefit from exploring a trade with the Rockets to land a player who can fit seamlessly alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook.
His trade theory would see the Lakers ship Patrick Beverley, Lonnie Walker IV, and some draft compensation in exchange for the forward.
“The Lakers can try to thread that needle by holding on to one of those picks and protecting the other (or bundling together a bunch of second-round picks), then attaching it to some lesser salary and making calls to some of those obvious sellers mentioned above. They’re rumored to have interest in (Bojan) Bogdanovic, but the better deal might be Patrick Beverley, Lonnie Walker IV, and some type of draft compensation for Eric Gordon, whose salary next year is non-guaranteed.
Gordon knows how to complement superstars (including Westbrook, during his final days as one in Houston), and he has playoff experience, a cannon, and the defensive wherewithal to close big games. This move wouldn’t make the Lakers a championship favorite, but Westbrook, Gordon, Austin Reaves, LeBron, and Davis is a lineup that can do some actual damage.”
This might not be a bad option considering Gordon has what it takes to add more balance to the Lakers’ present roster.
How Does Eric Gordon Help The Los Angeles Lakers?
For starters, the 33-year-old veteran is one of the more underrated players in the league who possesses the skill to play both aspects of the game. This season, he averages 12.1 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists for the Rockets, who are in a rebuild themselves. Add to this his ability to hold his nerve to close out games and playoff experience.
His trade value pretty much sees the Lakers sacrifice a pick. His $20.9 million salary for next year is non-guaranteed, and that puts the Rockets in the perfect place to trade him. Even if the Lakers don’t necessarily agree to shell out the kind of money, they could guarantee his salary for next year to then be used in a trade to land an All-Star, maybe.
Pina’s words of Gordon complementing the superstars hold water as well. Gordon is a proven commodity and perhaps LA could try and send in Kendrick Nunn and Beverley for the veteran. Only time will tell if this trade can indeed become a reality.
