The Toronto Raptors are actively exploring trade options for Bruce Brown, with his $23 million salary being a significant motivating factor. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Raptors are keen to offload Brown in hopes of enhancing their assets after trading Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers in January 2024. If a trade for Brown doesn’t come to fruition, the veteran guard could become a highly sought-after buyout candidate, potentially drawing interest from multiple contenders.

Bruce Brown joined the Raptors as part of the Siakam trade, which saw Toronto receive Brown’s contract alongside three future first-round picks. Since arriving, Brown’s contributions have been limited.

Recovering from a right knee injury that sidelined him for the first 31 games of the season, Brown has played in Toronto’s last nine games, averaging 7.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists on 43.3% shooting from the field and 31.3% from beyond the arc. These numbers are a step back from his performance during the Denver Nuggets’ championship-winning season in 2023.

In Denver, Brown was a vital contributor, averaging 11.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists while shooting 48.1% from the field and 31.7% from deep. His versatility on both ends of the floor made him a key piece in the Nuggets’ first-ever NBA title. However, his production has yet to reach similar heights during his stints with the Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors.

Brown is in the final year of a two-year deal, making him an attractive short-term option for teams looking to bolster their rosters without committing long-term resources. His expiring contract also makes him a potential buyout candidate if the Raptors cannot find a trade partner. A buyout would likely trigger significant interest from contenders eager to add his championship experience and two-way capabilities.

Several teams are monitoring Brown’s situation closely. The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly exploring multiple scenarios to acquire him. With their need for defensive versatility and bench scoring, Brown could seamlessly fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis in their pursuit of another championship.

Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors have also expressed interest. Adding Brown’s defensive prowess and playmaking ability would complement their high-paced offensive system and address some of their depth concerns.

One of the hurdles in moving Brown is his current production. Rival executives are reportedly waiting for him to regain his pre-injury form before committing significant assets to a trade. Nevertheless, his track record, especially his critical role in Denver’s championship run, makes him a valuable asset.

For the Raptors, trading Brown could allow them to acquire more young talent or draft capital to align with their rebuilding efforts. Alternatively, if Brown hits the buyout market, contenders could land him without sacrificing assets, making him one of the most coveted options for playoff-bound teams.

As the trade deadline approaches, Bruce Brown’s status will remain a focal point for several teams. Whether through a trade or a buyout, his skill set and championship pedigree ensure that he will have no shortage of suitors. The Raptors’ decision on Brown will shape not only their future but also the landscape for contenders aiming to make a deep postseason run.
